It was my first look at the Cal commit and he is a sound hitter that has the ability to do damage at any given time on the field. Copen looks the part as his power goes along with his big frame. He has power/contact tools in his offensive profile with the ability to drive low pitches. He has a smooth load with a slight leg kick, creating whip action with his hands when he connects with the baseball. He consistently is able to get into a good hitting position in his swing, even in his takes he is ready to hit. Copen has a good lower half and knows how to drive that back knee when rotating, allowing his hips to fire towards the baseball letting his strong hands/upperbody do the rest. Copen went 1-2 in vs Benici, driving a 2B to the LF line staying on top of a low pitch. The ball was hit on a line that one-hopped the fence, driving in a run. Overall Copen has a smooth swing that generates tons of power. The more he coils into his hips/backside, the more power he will see in his future. Through 7 games played Copen has a .321 AVG with a .500 OBP and will look to continue his success this season.
