Sumner has been on the radar since a strong playoff showing last spring, when he earned a late call-up due to injury and quickly forced his way into the lineup by hitting over .350 down the stretch. In that look, he showed impact with the bat — including a ball driven off the tall left-field wall at San Marcos — while also holding his own defensively in the outfield. Fast forward to 2026, and Sumner is now primarily behind the plate, where he’s beginning to look comfortable and projectable long term as a catcher. The frame continues to get stronger, and the offensive approach remains controlled and mature. He operates with a quiet swing, stays within himself, and shows a strong feel for the strike zone. While there are occasional tendencies to get under the ball, the natural strength when timing is synced up points toward developing power. Behind the plate, Sumner put together a standout defensive showing, keeping balls in front throughout and showing consistent 2.01-2.08 pop times with accurate throws to second. He also contributed offensively with a nine-pitch walk and an infield hit, rounding out a well-balanced performance.
