Laya has been one of my favorite bats to watch in my two years of watching San Diego high school baseball. The frame is exciting and offers a lot of room to dream on with a slim build with preexisting speed, arm, and pop at the plate. Laya has been showcasing all of these tools in the multiple looks I’ve gotten this spring. The game against Cathedral Catholic was no different, Laya held down center field, making multiple difficult catches on the run and looking into the sun. At the plate he worked competitive at-bats, laying off the offspeed and balls early in the count. The approach is intentional of hitting fastballs in the zone and waiting for the pitcher to come to him. Laya shot two groundballs to the right side one going for a groundout and the other for a single. In his third at-bat, he showcased his best swing of the day, down two strikes on two straight breaking balls, Laya took a third one that was left in the zone on the outer half of the plate and shot it to the wall in LCF for an easy double. The LHH swing is smooth and powerful as he continues to showcase good bat-to-ball facing a lot of offspeed in every game and at-bat as a top threat in the Eastlake lineup and in San Diego as a name to look out for in the MLB Draft this summer.

Laya looks to be the next great bat out of San Diego powerhouse Eastlake. The build is long, athletic, and strong. Standing at 6’3 ~190 lbs Laya showed off five tools at the ProCase West in June. He ran a 6.74 60-yard dash, threw 94 mph from the outfield, reached an exit velocity of 102 mph in BP and collected a double in-game. Laya is one of the San Diego players to look out for in the 2025 MLB Draft with his pure athleticism, raw power and strong arm from the outfield. He showed off the power in BP, shooting balls all over the yard. In-game, Laya was up against a formidable D1 commit and showed off the swing. In his first at-bat, he sent a hard line drive to right field for a single. In at-bat number two, He launched a fly ball deep to the warning track in right center field. Laya has shown improved swing decisions and an understanding of the zone. When in the field, Laya caught all opportunities with ease and got to show off the arm while ranging to his left. He caught the ball and transferred his momentum into an on-line throw directly to the base on a hop. His overall demeanor is relaxed and confident. With tons of eyes on him this season, Laya is dealing with it very well, staying composed and not letting the noise disrupt his routine.

The long limbed athletically built 6'3 192 lbs. LHH OF from San Diego put together a well-rounded showing from the pre-game workout into the in game performance. Continuing to show very well during my live looks at him his profile looks to rising and this outing was no different in helping Laya's future stock. During BP he showed off a easy fast turn with a smooth load that was consistently on time at launch. The hand path and barrel path both work up through the zone and generate consistent loft with carry which on a dense fog morning during BP that was surpressing power for hitters Laya was still able to run a few balls out to the pullside, but the carry he gets after contact shows middle of the field HR potential. He shows a solid feel to hit with consistency to finding his barrel that should give him a solid hit tool to go with the power in his profile. He generates buzz on the defensive side where his arm looks to be high level tool with strength/carry/accuracy to his throws and feel for the ball in the air combined with athleticism patrolling RF. Once the game got started he was able to translate his strong workout performance into a solid in-game showing picking up a pair of hits to go with multiple quality at bats. Opening the day he was able to muscle through an inner half FB to flare a single into shallow RF against Vaughn Neckar. He then worked a BB off Ethin Bingaman staying with the strike zone and not expanding off the plate away where the RHPs FB was living and then again picked up another BB against Sean McGrath and finally turned on an elevated FB up and in from Dylan Harrison that he was able to hit hard enough to one hop past the 1B into the RF corner where his athleticism was on display as he easily cruised into 3B with a triple showing solid running ability underway. As well, he added a flash of his defensive potential by making a spectacular diving catch on a hard line drive going towards the RF foul line in front of him off the bat of Trent Grindlinger. Laya is an Oregon Ducks commit.
