4.24.17 - Illinois commit. 6-foot-2, 195-pound, left-handed hitting, outfielder with an athletic frame, with room for continued physical development. Defensively, moves well, got good jumps and reads, covers ground. Offensively, open, crouched setup with high hands. Loads and separates, keeps his head still and hands stay back. Patient approach, did not chase out of the strike zone. Middle to pull approach. Went 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and a walk.
Future Games 2015 - Jones was impressive enough at the Future Games to be the first official verbal commit from Team Illinois. Shortly after the event Jones chose to stay in his home state, committing to Illinois. Jones is a two-way threat who possesses an impressive skill set both on the mound and as a position player. On the mound Jones has a strong arm, reaching 88 mph with his fastball sitting 84-86 mph and it showed life through the hitting zone. Along with the big fastball he showed feel for a curveball at 66-69 mph and flashed a changeup at 81 mph. Offensively Jones swings a left-handed bat that flashes pop, it’s a longer, slightly uphill path that is tailored for lifting balls into the outfield gaps. In game play Jones added a pair of singles with an RBI and a run scored over the weekend. Defensively Jones is an outfield prospect who has the tools to stick in centerfield. He ran a 6.88 on the laser timed 60 and his arm carries well at 89 mph from the outfield.
6.21.15 - Large frame, 6-foot-1, 180-pound left-handed hitting outfielder, athletic build, frame projects well. Strong arm from the outfield, carried well, threw out a runner at home on a sac fly. Showed the ability to back on baseballs, tracked well going back and away from his glove side. Offensively showed advanced bat speed, left handed hitter with pop, two hard hit balls to his pull side, mostly pull side approach. On the mound worked athletically, good landing and front side. High ¾ arm slot, fast strong arm. Fastball touched 89, sat 86-88 mph, slight arm side run, occasional tendency to leave up. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 69-71 mph.
10.26.14 - 6-foot-2, 180-pound muscular and athletic left-handed hitting outfielder/right-handed pitcher hits from a tall, open setup, short stride, short, uphill bat path produced line drives from gap-to-gap with pull side power, 83 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively, threw 85 mph from the outfield from long, high ¾ arm slot with accuracy and carry. Plays through the baseball, soft hands, fielding, natural outfield fielding actions. Ran a 7.14 60. On the mound, fastball sat 82-84 mph, touching 87 mph with run from long, high ¾ slot with some effort. Lands closed at foot strike, lower half stride direction stays in line with home plate. Curveball with 11/5 shape sat 69-72 mph. 72-75 mph changeup was thrown with good arm speed, mostly straight action. Jones is a high follow prospect in the class of 2017.
