4/30/14 Illinois Wesleyan commit. Unranked senior combines impressive size with pitchability. 6’4” 215 pound muscular frame, broad shoulders. Fastball ranged 81-84 throughout all six innings, straight with good downward angle coming from high ¾ arm angle. Methodical windup, gets to balance point, stays over rubber, and drives directly toward home. Hands set and break high, even with head. Lead arm/glove hand doesn’t reach out or engage, drives front glove hand elbow straight down, driving chest to plate. Front side glove action has some funk to it. Breaks hands with thumbs down, length in back of efficient arm arch. Early on elevated fastball, later in the game got on top and drove it down in the zone. The difference maker is Smyk’s hard, late breaking curveball, thrown from exactly the same window as his fastball. Curveball showed hard, late 11/5 bite consistently, at times 12/6. Several swings and misses on breaking balls in the dirt. Thrown from 75-78 mph, higher end later in the count when buried. Extreme confidence in breaking ball, used roughly 50 percent of the time, go-to pitch for a strike. Eight of nine strikeouts came on breaking ball.
