8-5-2018: Colin Simpson, 2018, R/R, C (Oklahoma State)
Simpson is nicknamed “Tank” for a reason. At five-foot-nine, 230 pounds he is built like one and his game is defined by power. From an open stance with a double-tap stride, he launched 18 home runs for the Cowboys this spring and followed it up with five more this summer for the Anglers. He’s a pull hitter who hits around the ball, will chase out of the zone and is susceptible to the strikeout (25% strikeout rate this summer, 23% spring). Despite his build, he’s a very good athlete. As a youngster he was a competitive gymnast and is still able to easily do a standing backflip (at 3:51 in the video). With a fringe average arm, he split his time between left field and catcher. Showed a 2.03 POP time between innings and a 2.21 in the game. He will need defensive polish at either position. After going undrafted in 2018, look for Simpson to be considered in the top 10 rounds as a bonus saving college senior in 2019 if he can continue to show the power production while limiting his strikeouts and showing some defensive improvement behind the dish.
