Battle For The Arch: Blast Motion Board

By: Kevin Cronin
Tech Analyst, Area Scout

On Thursday, September 28, the PBR Illinois and PBR Missouri scouting staffs collaborated to host the first annual Battle for The Arch event at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Missouri. This invite-only event pitted several talented uncommitted prospects from both states against each other, starting with a workout portion and concluding with a quick game between the teams afterwards.

Now, at the event's conclusion, it's time for our staff to start the post-event process by rolling out several different content pieces based on the day's performances. We previously rolled out our Statistical Analysis, where we looked at which prospects topped our leaderboards from the event and followed that up with a deeper, more analytical dive inside our TrackMan Files piece.

Today, we'll continue to unravel the data we collected with our Blast Motion sensors, which take a look at all the swing metrics gathered in batting practice.

Hand Speed (Peak & Average)

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

Bat Speed (Average)

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration (Peak & Average)

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.
