Joshua Priest has been on a tear this week, and he continued to swing a hot bat in Cathedral Catholic’s matchup against Grossmont, going 2-for-3 with a single and a double out of the 2-hole. The ‘27 right-handed hitter is starting to make his presence felt in a big way, consistently putting together quality at-bats. While his game has largely been contact-driven, I saw flashes of emerging power, especially in the seventh inning when he got a high fastball and drove it to right-center for a double, putting himself in position as the potential tying run. His stance may not be the most traditional or visually polished, sitting wide, low to the ground with rapid bat waggle, but the results are hard to ignore. Priest continues to prove that he can deliver at the plate, and with his approach and confidence growing, he’s quickly becoming a key offensive piece for the Dons batting .500 through 10 at-bats this week.

Priest is one of a good few of 2027s on the varsity squad at Cathedral Catholic. He was hitting up in the two spot in his first game of the season following his transfer sit-out. After seeing him a couple of times last year, the frame has added considerable size and strength in both the upper and lower body. The swing last year could be considered violent, this year the power in the hands and barrel is still there, just with more restraint. Priest registered two hits, first going the other way with two strikes and then grabbing another single getting good extension up the middle. The swing is short and compact with an upward trajectory. What stood out for Priest in my viewings in 2024 was the defensive profile, he was a strong defender with an advanced arm playing at 2B/3B last year. It looks like he has been moved to a corner outfield position for this season where the athleticism and arm will have no issue transferring over.

Physical: 5-9, 153 pounds; Athletic build with present strength throughout. 7.31 runner in the 60.

Offensively: RHH. Peak exit velocity of 94 MPH via Trackman. Wider straight up base and is engaged/into his legs. Quick load with a smaller stride. Hands get into a good launch position. Advanced bat speed for his level. Maximizes the lower half. Uphill path. Some length at times through the zone. Pull side approach. Flashes of wall-ball pull side power.

Defensively: INF - 78 MPH. OF - 80 MPH. Worked out in both OF/INF. Used a prep hop in the OF. Aggressive approach with glove getting down early without slowing down momentum. Clean exchange and transitions into crowhop well. Above average arm strength for level. 4/5 accurate throws in the OF. Average INF actions. Showed fundamentals with glovework. Direct approach to the ball.
