This was my first extended look at the talented two-way Duke signee. He opened the game playing SS and batting in the three spot for Flintridge Prep. While he showed plenty of ability as a LH hitter who shows strength through the turn and the ability to loft the ball to the pull side, narrowly missing a HR in his first plate appearance, with the actions to be a sound left side of the INF defender. It was what the physical Grable did during his two innings of work on the mound that really shone brightest. Coming in to pitch the fifth and sixth innings, it took him about three hitters to settle in, missing high early with his FB and to the glove side with his SLD. Once he got his delivery in sync, working down the mound with athleticism and fast arm speed, his three-pitch mix was utterly dominant over the next five batters. Grable collected three strikeouts over the two innings, throwing his fastball at 90–93, featuring heavy arm-side run, including seven whiffs on the offering alone. The SLD for Grable is a tight, sharp breaking offering that lived at 80–83 and shows whiff potential. He mixed in a tumbling SPLT in the 78–80 range that flashed potential as well. He begins the operation with an upper body lean into the hinge position before moving down to foot strike with a relatively easy operation featuring deception in the arm action. The frame, delivery, arm action, and three-pitch mix all present a long-term SP profile for him once he gets on campus. The ceiling is high, especially as there’s likely more to come for him on the mound, should he focus there full-time in college.
