Belge Bounces Back After Tough Year

By Nathan Rode
National Supervisor

In April 2014, more than a dozen scouts showed up to see RHP Scott Blewett (Baker HS, NY) make his first start of the spring. A St. John’s recruit, he was an early-round prospect thanks to his 6-foot-6, 220-pound frame and low-90s fastball. Despite lingering health questions that season, Blewett went on to be a second-round pick of the Royals and he signed for $1.8 million.

Starting opposite of Blewett that day was another St. John’s recruit in LHP Jeff Belge (Henningher HS, NY) and it was obvious the scouts were getting a sneak peek at another top prospect. Just a sophomore then, Belge hit 91 mph several times in the first inning, before settling into the 85-87 range.
