The freshman infielder caught my attention immediately upon seeing his first at-bat. Hitting out of the six-hole set the tone for his day with a barrel to deep left-center that was caught by the left fielder. Tavares followed this up with back-to-back hard-hit doubles, a liner to the left field fence and a grounder over the third base bag, driving in three runs on the day. Despite striking out in his final at-bat on a curveball in the dirt, Tavares gave me a good insight into his offensive profile this early in his amateur career. Tavares exhibits good bat speed at his age, with a smooth load, activated lower half, and good bat-to-ball skills. A good fastball hitter, I suspect that he will adjust well to breaking balls with more exposure as he advances in his high school career. Tavares also displayed great instincts on the bases, immediately heading to third on a play at the plate from his first double. Tavares is a name to keep on for the future.
