Mai is now in his third year as a varsity starter for Moorpark and with each passing year has continued to improve his tools across the board. Since my first ever look at AJ in 2023 against Thousand Oaks HS his defensive acumen has been very highly regarded by myself with smooth hands, rhythm to his feet, athleticism in his actions to go with confidence he is an impact defender up the middle with upside still to his defensive potential if he sees a future tick up in arm strength/foot speed. While the defense for Mai is fun to watch, it's been the development of his bat over the last three years from a high contact, but steeper downhill path as a Fr. into a better bat path as a Soph. to the improved actions in his hips/body staying behind the ball at contact his offensive tools have steadily ticked up each year. That improvement showed well over three at bats with all three being strong showings. Mai got to a 2K count in his first trip to the dish just missing a pair of early FBs on foul balls before connecting with one on the outer half that he stung to RCF for an easy standup double and then in the second trip to the dish jumped on an early outer half FB that he lined right at the RF for an L-9 before completing his day with a deep count AB which resulted in a K on a foul tip into the catchers glove. Mai was consistent with attacking FBs in the zone and putting his bat on the ball (zero whiffs on the day with eight swings) and staying away from FB/offspeed out of the zone over the day showing the bat to ball skills with his improved impact from a middle to opposite field approach.

AJ Mai, Moorpark High (CA), 2026 Positional Profile: SS/OF Up the middle profile who gives SS potential while adding intriguing RH swing with emerging impact. Body: 5-10, 180-pounds. Solid present build that shows some strength to it with some room to continue adding. Hit: RHH. Balanced set up with small knee bend even feet and vertical upper body. Hands are set about ear height near his head with higher back elbow and barrel tipped towards 3B dugout with some waggle to hands. Sways onto back side with a small leg lift to load body with barrel tip to load hands. Stays taller in lower half with quickness in his hips during the turn and upper body tilts to stay behind the baseball. Bat path works up with hands working up to a high finish. 65.5 mph bat speed with 8 G's of rotational acceleration. Power: 92 max exit velocity, averaged 80.1 mph. 339' max distance. Shows solid present top end exit velocity with some consistency to his ability to get the ball in the air. Approach works the middle of the field with doubles impact that should develop into HR in future. Arm: RH. INF-76 mph. Ball gets to the ear quickly with compact arm stroke that shows quickness to path. Solid 2B profile will need to add strength to stick at SS. Defense: Plays low with his hips, quick fluid feet with confidence in his actions. Glove is soft and can play both 1-2 handed while moving laterally/downhill with control. SS potential. ATH: 7.46 runner in the 60. 1.76 and 4.11 in the 10 and 30 yard splits. Drives off the line low while building speed and maintains it once reaching top speed. Good body control. 23.90 max vertical.
