VENTURA, CALIF. - The Uncommitted Spotlight Series returns as we stare straight ahead towards the 2025 CIF High School baseball rapidly approach for the '26 class. With that in mind, Prep Baseball California is highlighting some of the top uncommitted class of '26 athletes for college programs to be following come this spring. The player featured today is one of the top players in the state of California and figures prominently in our Class of 2026 Rankings.
We invite you to get to know them through the eyes of our Prep Baseball California staff of scouts both through our in person looks at players and/or the data-backed numbers collected at our events with our partnered companies. TrackMan, Blast Motion, and VALD Performance provide comparable data to project and evaluate players. All of these systems come together to give a clear picture at what colleges will get when a players steps onto their campus.
Today, we put the spotlight on the #152 ranked player in the 2026 class in SoCal '26 SS/2B AJ Mai from Moorpark High School in Moorpark, Calif.. 2025 will be the 3rd year on the varsity level for Mai who has continued to trend up as a player since the first time I saw him during his FR. campaign. In 2024 he was a vital piece of the Moorpark lineup as they marched to runner up finishes both in the CIF-SS D2 and CIF- D2 South Regional. For the season Mai played in 34 games netting 112 plate appearances for a total of 90 at bats posting a slash line of .300/.382/.378 while leading the team with 21 RBIs, tying for 4th in run scored with 16, while collecting 2 doubles, 1 triple and a HR (grand slam) for his Soph. campaign. I've long been a fan of the defensive actions of Mai since that first viewing and his stat line for 2024 backs it up with him posting a .968 fielding percentage in 126 chances committing just 4 errors while helping to turn 10 double plays.
A solidly built 5'10 180 lbs. frame which has some present strength in his lower/upper body with room to continue improving before he completes his high school career. Mai attended the 2024 Ventura County Uncommitted Game at Ventura College where he showed off a retooled swing which gives off vibes that he is ready to take the next step as an offensive player from high contact hitter to hitter with added impact in the offensive profile. During batting practice at the event Mai showed well on Blast Motion metrics including 20 MPH hand speed, 67.9 MPH bat speed with 10.5 Gs of rotational acceleration with a leveraged bat path through the zone and ability to keep his body behind the baseball at contact. The operation is controlled with a strong feel for hard contact which was evidenced by a present 88.6 MPH max EV while averaging 83.8 MPH over the course of batting practice including a max distance of 339' feet from a 55% sweet spot rate. His approach was geared to work the middle of the field which suits his offensive profile as a gap to gap doubles hitter who can loft a ball to the pullside for home run power (in game he drilled a ball to RCF that resulted in a triple).
Mai has steadily improved over each of his first two years on the varsity level at Moorpark High School. From a Fr. year where he saw significant playing time with flashes of his offensive potential while being a solid defender into a Soph. campaign in which he was a key piece of the lineup who made strong steps forward as a hitter while improving an already intriguing defensive profile. This spring he looks primed to again take another step forward on each side of the game and be a focal point again for the Musketeers as they eye another strong season in 2025, but even more so cementing Mai's profile as a uncommitted Middle Infielder who college coaches need to be paying close attention to for their 2026 class.
