This was my second live look at the rising Soph. from Santa Barbara HS and coming out of this one the future for Whitworth is a bright one. Standing next to the 6’4 Jetner Welch during the National Anthem Whitworth was a tick shorter, but every bit of the projectable athlete prototype. Getting a five at bat look at Whitworth (to go with four at bats in January) I’m a believer in the offensive profile for Whitworth as an impact profile bat with future power in the profile. The load is simple with a deeper, higher hand set and a small forward move he gets to the launch position consistently on time or early to get off a quick RH swing with present LVG to the pull side, but as he adds future bat speed and polish to his approach there is loft in the path which will play to HR power. Whitworth covers the dish well and looks comfortable recognizing spin during at bats. He stung three balls over the course of the game one deep down the LF line for a double falling about 5-8 feet short of a home run, got the barrel to an inside FB with enough strength/leverage to drop it in down the LF line and bounce down the line for a double and in his final trip to the dish smoked a CB to CF for an L-8 which took a stellar running catch from the opponents CF to take away his third hit. With an intriguing frame, feel to hit, impact in the profile, sound athleticism and plenty of arm strength (have seen him up to 89 MPH on the bump) Whitworth is making a case to be considered not only amongst the best 2027 players on the Central Coast, but amongst the entire state of California.
Physical: 6-0/155. Taller/lean build. Longer limbs. Projectable. Average swift athletic testing metrics.
Offensively: RHH. Open/athletic stance. Simple trigger with foot getting down early and hands working back creating quality separation. Stays connected throughout swing letting the back shoulder/elbow to slot the barrel early for a more uphill bat path. More FBs than LDs/GBs. Advanced bat/hand speed for a '27. Consistent out front contact. Post impact results were solid with balls coming off with backspin and carry. Balanced throughout the swing hitting behind a firm front side.
Defensively: INF - 75 MPH. Raw actions. Choppy feet at times but showed promise when on the move showing decent lateral quickness. Average glove skills. Above avg. arm strength. Loose arm with accuracy.
Pitching: Side steps into a mid-chest knee lift. Smaller drive-leg engagement. Lower half work in-line. Elbow lead out the glove. Elbow load into scap with getting slightly inverted. Level shoulders. Some head movement. Falls over front leg. Present arm speed. Gets into some decent layback. Works to a 3/4 slot. FB worked 73-76 showing straight action w/ lower efficiency. CB worked 63-64 showing slurvy break and getting a ton of IHB (19.2 inch avg.).
