The highest Edge Score within the given year. Edge Score is a comprehensive score that takes the core-six visual skills into account, providing an assessment of an athlete’s overall visual ability.
For the past 3+ years the Calabasas Coyotes have featured talented shortstops who have moved on to play D1 college baseball (Phoenix Call UCLA, Nate Castellon Cal Poly SLO) and now the Soph. Chang steps in as the next Coyote to man the spot. Wiry and athletically built with good actions across the board his foundation as a defender and RH hitter flash present ability, but with plenty of polish still in his profile that can make for an interesting ceiling for Chang. He moved well during INF/OF with smooth footwork moving laterally/downhill and athleticism in his body control, the hands flash solid to strong present ability playing both one or two handed, while his arm is solid with accuracy and some carry to his throws with everything showing room to tick up as he continues developing strength on his wiry frame. In game those actions flashed on a couple of nice plays ranging to his glove side, downhill to glove side and on balls at him, but there is some instinctual rawness to his defensive profile against higher level competition when the ball is hit to his backhand side or the high hop (which he got stuck in between on twice during the game) that will necessitate additional repetitions as he develops to be more consistent making those plays to help him stick at SS long term. At the plate it’s a smooth, controlled load from a wider base with quick hands and a compact path geared towards a middle of the field hard contact approach. Similar to the defensive profile for Chang he flashed interesting present ability, but demonstrated some of the youth/rawness that will need to be developed as he matures. Facing mid to upper 80’s velocity from the Chargers LHP he drew a 3-2 walk in his first plate appearance not chasing out of the zone on the 3-2 pitch and then followed it up with a solid swing on a FB which he stung up the middle but the Agoura SS made a nice play to take a hit away and then again his final at bat he stayed on a FB over the plate to sting another solid GB up the middle. Where his youth showed up was facing soft/spin from a LHP in his third at bat he swung over three CHGs for a strikeout which can be improved with better use of the lower ½ to stay back slightly longer with his hands and handle soft offerings from pitchers. Overall, the foundation for Chang is solid and flashes the kind of skill to be the next in line of talented Calabasas Shortstops, but he has development/improvement to make on his physicality, defensive instincts in game and his offensive swing/approach to reach his future potential and will be a good follow over the coming years.
