It may not have been his sharpest outing last Thursday, but there were still plenty of encouraging signs from the LSU recruit to build on moving forward. Cupit drew the Opening Day start for the Rebels against Catholic BR and took the loss after working three innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts on 66 pitches (35 strikes). The biggest takeaway was simply strike percentage — he didn’t fill the zone the way we’re accustomed to seeing — but it was Opening Day, and there’s little doubt that will tighten up as the spring unfolds. The raw stuff remains electric. His fastball peaked at 95 mph and comfortably sat 90-92 mph, flashing quality command at times, particularly to his glove-side. The 77-81 mph slider also took a step forward, showing sharper action and improved depth, continuing its progression into a true swing-and-miss weapon. Even without his best feel, Cupit still flashed frontline traits. With his arm talent and competitive makeup, there’s every reason to expect him to round into form and anchor West Monroe’s staff as the season gains momentum.

6'0" 185 lbs. durable frame. The state's top southpaw got the start for the Rebels in our Week 1 Game of the Week vs. Catholic BR, and looked the part of a #1 starter, especially since he was facing the talented Bears lineup for his first start of the season. After giving up a run in the first inning, Cupit settled down and ended up turning a quality outing. The LSU recruit sat 88-91 mph with his FB and his 79-80 mph SL continued to show improvement with sweeping action across the zone. Cupit ended up going 3.1 IP giving up 4 H and 1 ER with 2 BB and 5 K's. He showed maturity and toughness, and stayed composed in a hostile enviornment at Grizzly Field.
