National Player of the Week: 5/5 to 5/11

By Andy Sroka
Managing Editor, Scouting

Today, we’re announcing our ninth National Player of the Week of the 2025 campaign, as we get closer and closer to the end of the spring season, as most states are entering their playoffs or even state championship series.

The following players were submitted by their coaches to our state directors and they went on to earn the Player or Pitcher of the Week award in those states. From there, we sifted through the country’s POTWs and selected the top performer among them, singling them out as the sole National Player of the Week. If you’re a coach interested in submitting a nomination this season but have not yet received that form so far this spring, visit our staff directory to find the contact information for the state director overseeing your state’s season coverage.

Our staff took player stat lines from the week of May 5 to May 11 into account when determining these awards.

🏆 NATIONAL POTW

Riley Asmus SS / Morris Area, MN / 2026

“The junior shortstop Asmus hit .562 last week and all nine of his hits went for extra bases, including three home runs, and that helped him drive in a whopping 18 runs for Morris Area.”

Andy Judkins, Minnesota State Director

STATE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Colorado

+ Jason Olsen, RHP/SS (Legacy HS, 2025) | Chandler-Gilbert JC:
“The Prep Baseball Colorado staff was on hand for last week's top pitching performance as Olsen went 6.2 innings against a ranked Mountain Vista squad, and punched out 14 batters and allowed just two hits, two walks, and no runs in the outing. The Chandler-Gilbert JC commit and West Coast Games alumni is one of the toughest arms to beat in the state at the moment. Olsen's fastball comes in around 88-90 mph but what really stands out is his above-average spin rates and carry on his four-seamer. The senior is able to generate around 18 inches of IVB (induced vertical break) with an average spin rate over 2,600 rpm. Olsen pairs this strong fastball with a swing and miss breaking ball that he can spin around 2,700 rpm. We also saw Olsen flash some plus changeups to left-handed hitters in this game.

Overall on the season, Olsen has racked up 60 Ks in 30.2 innings with a 1.60 ERA at the 5A level in Colorado. Olsen will matchup with Cherokee Trail in regionals this weekend in what could be an electric pitching matchup if Cherokee Trail pairs him up with Carter Wilcox and his 95 mph fastball from the left-side.”

Florida

+ Wilson Andersen, RHP (Jesuit HS, 2026) | Mississippi State:
“Andersen, a junior Mississippi State recruit, went 1-0 with a complete game, seven innings pitched, allowing one hit, no runs, one walk, while recording 16 strikeouts. He also helped his cause going 7-for-7 with three doubles, one triple, one home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs at the plate.”

(6/6/24)

+ Griffin Miller, OF (Jupiter HS, 2026) | Tennessee:
“Miller, a junior Tennessee recruit, went 4-for-7 with four home runs, seven RBIs, five runs scored, and was hit by a pitch helping Jupiter advance to the state's final four with the state championships coming up this week.”

Rocco Iervasi, Florida Director of Operations

Illinois

+ Ryan Duncheon Jr. , RHP (East Peoria HS, 2026) | Illinois State :
“Duncheon did a bit of everything this past week, but on the mound is where he really shine. He struck out 16 over eight innings, scattering four hits with just one walk and no runs allowed. On top of that, he also went 6-for-12 at the plate with a home run, triple, two doubles, four RBIs and five runs scored.”

(4/28/25)

+ Jack Wheeler, 3B/RHP (Morris HS, 2025) | Illinois:
“The Illinois commit was a key factor in helping Morris clinch their third straight I8 conference title, going 9-for-15 with three home runs, two doubles, 11 RBIs and four runs scored. He also hopped on the mound and fired six innings with no earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts to earn the win.”

Peter Hamot, Assistant Scouting Director, Illinois/Wisconsin

(5/5/25)

Kansas

+ Beau Peterson, 3B (Mill Valley HS, 2026) | Texas:
“Every week we get bombarded with player of the week nominations, normally spread out over a large number of players from across the state. This week, we saw more nominations for one player than any week in Kansas history. With that, one of the top players in the state earned the award, showing all facets of his game.

The Texas commit helped lead Mill Valley to a 4-0 week by going 10-for-15 with three doubles, two homers, six RBIs, and he stole six bases.”

Andy Urban, Central Region Supervisor

(5/6/25)

Texas

+ Taylor Tracey, LHP/OF (Dripping Springs HS, 2025) | Tennessee:
“On the brink of elimination in game two, Tracey tossed a complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts, holding the opposition to just two hits. The Tigers would force a game three where Tracey hit a big home run en route to a series victory. For the series, he was 5-for-9 at the plate and continues to show why he is one of the top players in the state.”

Brandon Gowins, Texas State Director

(4/26/25)

Indiana

+ Brandt Kendall, OF (Scottsburg HS, 2025) | Ball State:
“The Ball State recruit was flat-out dominant for Scottsburg last week as he went 6-for-9 with two doubles and three homers on the week, resulting in nine runs scored and seven RBIs, and he reached base at a .769 clip. Kendall now has five home runs in total on the spring, good for second place in Indiana's 3A class. He also serves as an impact arm for the 11-3 Warriors, tossing 5.1 innings last week, striking out 11, and only allowing one earned while picking up a save.”

Cooper Trinkle, Indiana Scouting Director

(5/10/25)

Kentucky

+ Cam Smith, C (North Laurel HS, 2026) | Uncommitted:
“The North Laurel backstop led the Jaguars to a perfect 4-0 week with his great performance at the plate. Smith totaled 13 bases this week on six hits, batting .429 with a double and two bombs. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound junior also scored three runs while driving in seven. North Laurel has been an interesting team to watch all season, as Smith and the Jaguars now hold a 16-12 record and have climbed up to the No. 4 ranking in the 13th Region. After going undefeated last week, they continued their win streak with a run-rule victory last evening to make it five in a row. With three games left in the regular season, North Laurel is looking to finish on a high note and put the rest of the 13th Region on watch as they try to catch fire and make a run in the postseason.

They'll need Smith's bat to stay hot near the top of the lineup, as the junior C/OF now leads the Jaguars' offense with 29 RBIs and 16 XBHs, including 6 HR, as well as 14 walks and 30 hits overall on the year, good for an impressive .349 batting average.”

+ Gray Davis, RHP/INF (Trinity HS, 2027) | Uncommitted:
“Currently ranked No. 1 overall in the state's sophomore class, Gray Davis was a part of an absolutely ridiculous week for Trinity's pitching rotation, kicked off by his own complete-game one-hitter against Indiana's Providence High, one of the top 2A schools in the state. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound two-way was dominant all day long and he took a perfect game to one out in the seventh inning. Davis only saw a three-ball count twice in the entire outing, completing the game in just 88 pitches. As demonstrated by his 88-92 mph fastball, 77-80 mph slider, and 80 mph change, an arsenal that we saw back in March at our Kentucky High School Invitational, Davis has an effortless ability to miss barrels while locating all three pitches in and out of the zone. The young righty recorded 19 whiffs on the day for an insane swing-and-miss percentage of 21.6 percent. Davis is now the leader in the Shamrocks' pitching staff with 43.0 innings, allowing just five earned runs on the entire season while striking out 53 batters with a 6-0 record and 0.81 ERA.

With three games left in the regular season, Trinity is riding an 11-game win streak and they are red hot at the perfect time. If they can continue to put up these video-game like numbers, look for the Shamrocks to have a good chance of making it out of the gauntlet 7th Region.”

Jamie Tessoff, Kentucky State Director

(2/8/25)

Oregon

+ Sawyer Nelson, SS (South Salem HS, 2026) | Loyola Marymount:
“Nelson, a key player for top-ranked South Salem, had a huge offensive week last week. The junior went 8-for-13 with four home runs, a double and a walk. The LMU commit also tallied nine RBIs and scored seven runs across three games. Nelson was most recently seen with team PNW at Prep Baseball's Future Games last summer.”

(7/24/24)

+ Zack Hankins, LHP (Taft HS, 2026) | Uncommitted:
“The lefty earns 'Pitcher of the Week' honors in Oregon's Week Eight action after a remarkable outing. Hankins threw seven innings, allowing just one hit while striking out an incredible 18 batters. The Taft High product walked two batters and gave up no runs in a complete-game victory. Hankins was most recently seen at PNW Preseason All-State this winter.”

Dylan Grenz, PNW Associate Scout

(2/17/25)

Washington

+ Will Cahill, OF (Kennedy Catholic HS, 2025) | Washington:
“Cahill is his state's 'Hitter of the Week' after a huge pair of games, going 6-for-8 with two home runs. The senior posted four runs and nine RBIs, and eight of those RBIs came in a single game. The Washington commit was most recently seen at PNW Preseason All-State last winter.”

+ Harrison Hoffarth, LHP (Columbia River HS, 2025) | Seattle:
“The 6-foot-3 lefty spun a gem last week to win 'POTW' honors in the state, going 8.2 innings of shutout baseball while striking out 16. The senior allowed just three hits and no walks in this standout outing. The Seattle University recruit was most recently seen at PNW State Games last summer, and he has been dominant on the mound all spring.”

Dylan Grenz, PNW Associate Scout

(7/30/24)

Wisconsin

+ Caden Meyer, SS/RHP (Greendale HS, 2025) | Carthage College:
“Meyer was a key piece for Greendale, going 3-0 on the week. Across the three games, Meyer was a consistent and impact bat for the Panthers, going 9-for-12 at the plate with nine extra-base hits, 15 RBIs, seven doubles, a triple and a home run, scoring five runs himself.

Meyer got his week started on Tuesday in a run-rule victory over West Allis Central, going 4-for-4 at the plate with three doubles and five RBIs, scoring twice himself. He kept things rolling on Wednesday in another run-rule victory over Central. This time Meyer went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple, home run and nine RBIs with three runs scored. Rounding off his week on Friday in a 12-1 victory against Wauwatosa West, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI.

The senior infielder raised his average to .392 on the year with a 1.132 OPS over the course of the week, while setting the program record for RBIs in a game with nine on Wednesday. Projectable and athletic standing at 5-foot-10, 150 pounds with reliable defense in the infield and bat-to-ball traits.”

+ Loren Georger, RHP (Appleton West HS, 2025) | Saint Louis:
“Georger had a standout week for Appleton West across two appearances on the mound. Across two starts Georger would strike out 23 batters over nine innings on the mound, allowing just one earned run on seven hits, walking two.

Monday against Fond du Lac, Georger struck out eight batters across three innings, walking one batter, while filling up the zone at a 66 percent strike rate and he consistently got to strike one on the first pitch of the at-bat. Goerger would start again on Friday against Oshkosh North and pitch a complete-game shutout. Across a six innings, Georger stuck out 15 of the 23 batters he faced, allowing four hits and a walk, earning the win. At the plate, Georger helped his cause going 2-for-4 with two doubles an RBI and two runs scored.

Georger has been a consistent presence atop the rotation for Appleton West for multiple years now. Across 25.2 innings so far this spring, Georger has struck out 48 batters with a 1.91 ERA and a .196 batting average against.”
