By Shooter Hunt
Vice President, Scouting

From coast-to-coast winter workouts to a jam-packed spring slate, Prep Baseball’s boots-on-the-ground staff has been hard at work, evaluating and identifying emerging talent in the 2028 class. The result: a comprehensive and expanded Top 200 that reflects both the depth and promise of a group still very much on the rise.

Movement within these early lists, especially among the underclassmen, is often driven by the sheer volume of new faces coming onto the scene. And this cycle was no different. With a fruitful first half of the year in the books, the updated board sets the stage for a critical summer stretch where players will have every opportunity to rise, separate, and cement their status.

As always, Prep Baseball remains fully dialed in tracking talent, refining evaluations, and setting the tone for what’s next. Now, the summer circuit kicks into full gear with all roads leading to Prep Baseball’s Super Sophomore Games.

A look at the Top-10

The dynamic athleticism and two-way potential of No. 1 OF/RHP Dexter McCleon (Buford HS, GA) once again has the Georgia native standing at the top of the class. Whether pumping out electric stuff on the mound or impacting the ball at the plate from the right side, the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder possesses a significant amount of can’t teach talent and upside.

Jumping up to No. 2 in the class is OF/LHP Keelan Zumwalt (Summit Christian HS, KS). At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, with a high waist, square-shouldered frame, the physical upside is almost as much as the pure tool profile. A quick-armed, athletic mover on the mound with advanced feel for spin and an upper-80s fastball, there are sure to be steady jumps with some frontline potential. However, the pitch tracking from the left side and present ability to cover the plate with some impact shines on what might ultimately be a power bat and impact position player.

Returning top-10-ranked players like No. 3 LHP Yariel “Lito” Diaz (TNXL Academy, FL), No. 4 SS Colin Anderson (Etowah HS, GA), No. 5 OF Ethan Stewart (DH Conley HS, NC), and No. 8 LHP Luke Esquivel (Grapevine HS, TX) all showcased impact upside with top-end tools throughout the spring.

Diaz and Esquival electrify with huge arm talent that joins polished, athletic deliveries and full arsenals. Anderson and Stewart look to be mainstays at the top of the class thanks to some of the most impactful heavy barrels in the class, but especially the swing decisions that they have showcased against high level arms. Both have present foundations that will provide for even greater future development.

Newcomers in the Top-10 🌟

+ No. 6: RHP Gavin Chakar (Norwalk HS, CT) is one of the youngest players in this class, but already boasts a 96 mph fastball that comes out of a 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame that is very much still adding strength. A pristine delivery allows the big right-hander’s quick arm to play cleanly before eye-opening quickness is seen out front. Beyond the sheer excitement of the pure velocity, it is the command that Chakar possesses at such a young age, along with a full arsenal of weapons, that catapulted him into the top-10 with a chance to continue rising.

+ No. 7: LHP Greyson Bell (Daniel Boone Area HS, PA) is a 6-foot-2, 170-pound wiry-athletic southpaw whose whiff-inducing arsenal includes an upper-80s fastball and vicious pair of breaking balls along with a faded changeup. The full arsenal is tantalizing, joining a silky smooth delivery and whippy arm in exhibiting the look of a potential frontline starter in the making. The fact that Bell also showcases a nice left-handed stroke only helps his cause as an impact player in the class, and will only help provide for quick advancements.

+ No. 9: SS Theo Swafford (Sierra Canyon HS, CA) jumped on the scene in the fall and has yet to slow down. An impact player for his varsity team this spring, the quick twitch from the left side sees lightning-quick hands turn a surprisingly thunderous barrel given his developing 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame. Bouncy on the dirt with soft hands and a confident glove, the SoCal native appears to only be getting started with regards to climbing to a high ceiling.

+ No. 10: RHP Jordan Ayala (Norco HS, CA) not only churned out electric stuff throughout the spring, including a 94 mph fastball and hammer pair of breaking balls, but he used them to dominate some of the best collection of talent in any class. Attacking the zone with fearless aggression, the wiry-athletic, 6-foot, 170-pound right-hander hunts whiffs and displays the ability to finish hitters late in counts. Competitive on the bump, there is plenty to like about the future for Ayala.
