Prep Baseball Louisiana: Scout Blog (Week 9)

Alex Armand & Tyler Leary
Prep Baseball Louisiana Staff

The best time of the spring kicked off last week with the first round of the 2024 LHSAA playoffs, and our staff was able to get out and see several new teams and prospects. Today, we continue our coverage of the 2024 high school season with our updated Scout Blog.  The Louisiana Scout Blog provides insider information and scouting notes from our scouting staff during the high school baseball season. This running blog will feature information on underclass prospects, unsigned seniors, draft prospects, and anything else that is notable.  We will provide a wide range of information, including player evaluations, velocities, pop times, home to first times, and more.

Continue to check back here, as our Louisiana Scouting Staff will add scouting reports, upon the completion of each week.

SATURDAY APRIL 20, 2024

+ 2026 RHP Javonte Gray (Hahnville HS)

There aren't many pitching prospects that are able to make a good impression in 1/3 of an inning pitched, but Gray managed to do just that last Saturday in the first round of the playoffs against Neville.  The uncommitted sophomore right-hander entered the game in the Top of the 6th inning, and his frame was the first thing to stick out.  At 6'3" 160. lbs. with long limbs, there's substantial projection left and a ton to dream on.  We last saw Gray at a workout in the fall of 2022, and it was evident last Saturday that he's made a lot of jumps and strides since that day.  He's an athletic mover down the slope with a super quick arm and clean delivery.  His FB sat 86-87 mph with life through the zone and although he only used his 74 mph CB once in game, the pitch showed promise during his warm-ups.  Another interesting note with Gray, is the fact that he's young for his class, as he won't turn 18 years old until after graduation.  Projectable 6'3" RHP's that move right don't grow on trees, so we expect for a lot of college programs to continue to follow Gray over the summer, much like our staff will do as well.
