Division 3 Team Of The Week: 2nd Edition - Ottawa Lake Whiteford

OTTAWA LAKE - Expectations are being met by Ottawa Lake Whiteford, the Prep Baseball Division 3 Team of the Week.

A pair of close wins over St. Mary Catholic Central, 3-2 and 4-1, opened the week before 9-3 and 11-1 victories over Summerfield. A 12-0 blanking of Swanton followed at week’s end to improve the Bobcats to 9-1 on the season.

“Before the season I knew that we would be very good defensively and deep in pitching,” noted head coach Terry Pant, whose squad is ranked fifth in the state in Division 3. “So far I feel like they’ve lived up to expectations with only 10 errors through the first 10 games and our top four pitchers have had really strong outings.”

Senior Logan Tammerine fanned eight in five innings on the mound in the first win against St. Mary with Tre Eitniear throwing five frames for the win in game two. The freshman also went five innings with nine Ks against Swanton.

Junior Nate Stevens struck out 13 in the first Summerfield contest while senior Logan Keane, who has not permitted an earned run this season, had 11 strikeouts in game two.

Stevens, who leads the team in batting with a .414 average, has a 0.525 ERA, Tammerine is at 1.500 and Eitnier 1.077.

“As the season moves along we cannot become complacent,” explained Pant, who pointed to the improvement of senior Mason VanBrandt (.381 average) as a big part of the team’s success to date. “We need to push to get better every day.”

Now 4-0 in the Tri-County Conference, Whiteford has doubleheaders with Morenci on Wednesday and Adrian Madison on Friday.

“We feel like we have a very talented team this season that can compete every time we step on the diamond,” Pant concluded. “If the bats start heating up it will be a great year.”
