Prep Baseball Illinois Pitcher of the Week: Joshua Vaughn

By: Pete Hamot
Assistant Director, Illinois & Wisconsin

On Friday, May 3rd, RHP Joshua Vaughn (Illini Bluffs, 2024; Bradley commit) put together arguably the most dominant performance we have seen in some time, twirling a perfect game in a 1-0 win over Peoria Christian. For his efforts, Vaughn has been named this week’s Pitcher of the Week.

Throwing a perfect game is extremely rare on its own, but Vaughn took it to the next level when he recorded every out via the strikeout, notching 21 on the game. He only needed 87 pitches to complete this feat, with 67 of them being strikes.

Committed to play his collegiate ball at Bradley, the right-hander has impressed our staff numerous times in the past, running his fastball up to 90 mph to pair with a sharp, mid-70s slider and changeup that plays around 80 with a similar profile to the fastball.

On the season, Vaughn now boasts a 5-1 record with 32 innings pitched, a 0.21 ERA, just eight hits allowed, six walks and an eye-opening 77 strikeouts.

Stands at an athletic 5-foot-11, 170-pounds with room to fill. Vaughn threw seven innings, struck out 12, walked two, allowed no runs, and one hit. The only hit allowed came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Worked at a quick pace throughout the game, attacking hitters with the fastball early on in the count, and pounded the zone for strikes (74%). Mostly threw fastballs in this outing that flashed arm-side run, the pitch was mostly effective when he started it in the middle part of the zone and let it run to the inside part of the plate to a right-handed hitter. Fastball sat 86-88 mph, topped out at 89 mph. Slider sat 73-76 mph with 10/4 sweeping shape, showed swing-and-miss potential. Another impressive look at one of the top uncommitted arms in Illinois’ class of 2024.

We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within tomorrow's Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that.
