The 2A field is set and each team's frontline starter makes for some very interesting matchups especially on day one.  There has always been a strength in Oklahoma compared to some other states in the amount of depth and quality prospects that come from these smaller schools.  This year is no different with multiple commitments taking the field and plenty more who's recruitment is on the horizon.  We take a look at a few players to watch from each team and preview each team ahead of this week's action.

OKTAHA

Coach Rodden and the Oktaha Tigers come into the state tournament with as high of expectations as anyone. The Tigers have played arguably the toughest schedule in small school baseball that saw them play 13 games against opponents 4A or higher. The key to success in this state tournament is to get deep outings out of their starting pitching so they can have some depth by the end of the state tournament. Oktaha has a deep lineup led by a pair of 2025 catching prospects in Darren Ledford and Mason Pickering. The Tigers have a bunch of left handed hitting prospects expected to make impacts at the next level which makes them a fun follow in this state tournament.

Central (Sallisaw)

Coach Green and the Central Tigers went into their regional tournament as the 3 seed but were able to sweep through it clinching a state tournament berth. The Tigers are led by Seniors Connor Walters and Cade Tucker and have gotten production from two-way junior Bo Locust as a hitter and on the mound as a left handed pitcher. We are interested to see if Central can continue to stay hot and get production out of the top of the lineup which got them here in the first place.

The Preston Pirates and Coach Hudson look to take the next step and cement themselves as one of the favorites in 2A going forward. The Pirates have proven they are capable of staying in big games but look to finally get over the hump in this year’s state tournament. Preston is led by the Dean brothers who both impact the game in their own ways. Senior Kellen Dean can hurt defenses as an extra base threat as sophomore Kaden Dean is a two-way threat as a mid 80s LHP who is also one of the Pirates top offensive producers. If the Pirates want to make a run, they will need quality innings from Dean and Senior Easton Shaw on the mound combined with timely hitting.

WISTER

Coach Tucker and the Wister Wildcats have an experienced group who seems to have been playing their best baseball over the past few weeks. The Wildcats have won 13 straight and have one of the better pitching duos in small school baseball. Led by junior RHP Dartyn Meeks and Senior RHP Landon Donaho, Wister has two starting caliber pitchers who have the ability to beat some of the best lineups in the state when on. Senior Tucker Wooten has been a mainstay at the top of the Wister order and has produced against top end pitching in the past. Look for the Wildcats to lean on experience to get them over the hump and go deep in this state tournament.

CASHION

Coach Mounce and Cashion have the top end talent to make a run in this state tournament if they can continue to get production out of their best producers. The Wildcats have the pitching to survive a deep run led by seniors Chance Acord and Hunter Gibson. Acord has been one of the top pitching prospects at the 2A level the past few years and has continued to pitch well since his return to Cashion in early March. Hunter Gibson has been able to compete against some high level lineups and has the ability to keep the Wildcats in games against quality opponents. Expect offensive production from those last two names and senior Cooper Frazee who has been their main producer at the top of the Cashion lineup. 

LATTA

Coach Atkinson and Latta have taken care of business to this point in the postseason and look to carry momentum into the state tournament. Sophomore Reese Littlefield has been the engine that makes this Latta team go at the top of the order, as he has been their main producer out of the leadoff spot this spring. If Latta wants to make a run and win a few games in this state tournament, they need quality outings out of their top pitchers so they can give their offense a chance to score some runs and stay in games.

PANAMA

Coach Caldwell and the Panama Razorbacks are a true wild card in this 2A state tournament as they have arguably the most talented pitcher in the class available to them. Senior Brex Caldwell has the ability to beat anyone when he is on, making him a true x-factor early in this tournament. Caldwell works in the low to mid 90s overpowering hitters while mixing in a sharp low to mid 80s SL for strikes. Panama will need some offensive production from the top of the lineup as they will need to score to get some of the pressure off their pitching staff.

Coach Harris and the Dale Pirates are playing their best baseball of the year and it couldn’t come at a better time. After dropping some games early in the spring, the Pirates haven’t lost since March 25th and have rattled off 22 straight wins and have beaten some 2A contenders and higher class contenders along the way as well. The Pirates have experience all over the diamond including two-sport star Dayton Forsythe who is headed to play basketball at the University of Oklahoma in the fall. Dale has also added sophomore infielder Jackson Harris into the mix who has been producing out of the two spot in the order all spring. The rotation is headlined by Senior RHP Cade Dickinson who has had some velocity jumps on the mound this spring. If the Pirates want to make a run, their pitchers need to be able to throw strikes and compete so they can get their hot lineup to the plate as much as possible.
