VENTURA, CALIF. - The Uncommitted Spotlight Series continues after a jam packed summer of Prep Baseball California events, summer travel baseball, and other opportunities to evaluate players we will be recognizing some of the top remaining uncommitted players around the state. We will be looking at players from the 2026 class and 2027 classes across the upcoming weeks/months.

We invite you to get to know them through the eyes of our Prep Baseball California staff of scouts both through our in person looks at players and/or the data-backed numbers collected at our events with our partnered companies. TrackMan, Blast Motion, and VALD Performance provide comparable data to project and evaluate players. All of these systems come together to give a clear picture at what colleges will get when a players steps onto their campus.

Today, we put the spotlight on an impressive 2027 player who is featured inside the Top 50 of our 2027 California rankings. We are looking at SoCal '27 OF/INF Griffin Fien from Chaparral High School in Temecula, Calif.. Fien was a standout for our scouting staff in the San Diego area and Inland Empire especially Vinnie Alfino who saw him multiple times in spring. Then the highly talented offensive Fien made the trip to Fullerton to compete in the 2025 California State Games where he was a standout performer across all three days.

Fien's offensive profile was impressive during his batting practice session at State Games backing up the live looks from spring. The RH hitter starts from a balanced set up with an uptempo load as he gets his weight into his back hip before making the forward move to launch. His hands start near his head and he uses a small hand load before getting to his turn. The path is direct with his hands and the barrel works uphill with leverage through contact. His turn has an impressive ability to generate torque with a peak rotational acceleration of 22.1 Gs while showing present quickness with his hands up to 20.3 MPH peak hand speed and flashes compact solid present bat speed at 69.1 MPH in the swing operation. The tempo of his load and explosive turn allows him to generate impressive upper end exit velocities for his size including a peak EV of 96.9 MPH and a max distance of 354'. His Trackman data showed a predominant amount of his contact being in the air with a 63% fly ball/line drive rate during the batting practice portion of State Games.

The 2025 spring season was a bit down for the Chaparral program as a team, but Fien took advantage of consistent playing time to produce a stong first varsity season. Griffin played in 26 games while taking 105 plate appearances with 92 official at bats posting a slash line of .370/.429/.587 including 34 total hits with 12 of those going for extra bases (seven doubles, two triples, three homers). He drove in 25 runs while scoring another 20 runs himself and drew 7 walks on the spring while stealing 12 bags. He posted a 1.000 fielding percentage in 65 chances in the OF.

Fien is compact, but athletically built at 5'9 178.4 lbs frame that has some solid present strength to it, but continues to develop and add physicality as he is maturing. A high quality athlete he posted 6.84 60 yard sprint speed with 1.62 10 and 3.80 30 yard split while reaching a top end 20.2 MPH run speed. He shows a CF defensive potential profile with his athleticism and could potentially handle reps on the INF dirt at 2B/3B. He has a strong present arm with 89 MPH OF velocity showing carry out of the hand.

With an impressive season of stats on the varsity level in a strong league, the upward trend to his overall profile this summer and the high level profile with real offensive potential Fien should be a name college programs are keeping close tabs on for their 2027 class.

I continue to be impressed by Fien as this was my 2nd viewing of him in as many weeks. He continues to hit at a high level this spring and has emerged as one of the most consistent offensive producers across the San Diego and Temecula area in the ‘27 class. The Chaparral standout added to his already impressive season with another strong showing, this time patrolling CF, just a week after looking just as comfortable at 2B against Murrieta Mesa. That versatility has been a major asset for the Pumas, and he’s showing he can impact the game in multiple ways. At the plate, Fien brings a balanced swing that allows him to drive the ball to all fields. He’s consistently on time, barrels the baseball with regularity, and rarely gets off his approach. There’s a calm presence in the box and the results speak for themselves. Through 54 at-bats, Fien is hitting a scorching .481 with 3 HRs, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 23 RBIs, and 18 runs scored. He’s also posted a 1.323 OPS, showcasing his ability to hit for average, power, and get on base. The offensive impact is real, and he’s doing it while moving around the field and handling different defensive responsibilities with ease. Fien’s blend of production, versatility, and feel for the game makes him one of the more intriguing young players in the area—and a name that’s firmly on the radar moving forward.

I was able to get my first look at Fien after seeing he’s been off to a scorching start in 2025. Coming into league play, he was hitting .476 with a team high 20 RBIs all while hitting out of the lead off spot for the Pumas. He followed that up with a HR to start the game for CHS in the bottom of the first inning. He drove a FB the opposite way for a HR that left the yard with plenty of carry over the wall. It was his 2nd homer of the season which is a team high for Chaparral. Later in the 5th inning, in a 1-1 tie, he doubled down the LF line that put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Two batters later, CHS scored on a ground ball that found a hole with the infield playing in, all created by Fien’s double that started the rally for the Pumas. Fien looks confident when he’s in the batter's box and he doesn’t get cheated on pitches in the zone. He hunts mistakes and does damage when he gets them. It will be interesting to see as Southwestern League play continues to unfold this week and beyond, if teams will start pitching to Fien more carefully because he only has 1 BB in 2025. With Fien empowering the offense at the top, it may be wise for teams to try and attack the CHS lineup differently and have someone else other than Fien beat them because he has been so successful a little over a third of the way through this season. With Chaparral off to a hot start at 9-3 in 2025, it has been an underclass sophomore providing major contributions for a team that has high hopes to make a run this year in CIF. Fien’s updated numbers after the win are: .489/.500/.822 with 5 2Bs, 2 3Bs, 2 HRs, 21 RBIs, 16 Rs, and 11 SBs.
