ZT SCOUT DAY: TOP PERFORMERS
|
Logan Thien OF / RHP / Fullerton Union High, CA / 2027The local Fullerton High School product put together a well rounded overall day. Standing 6'2 and just a tick under 200 lbs. at 198 currently Thien fits the profile physically of a corner defender with impact potential in his offensive game. The skill set for Thien backs up this physical projection with strong results across the board during the pro-style workout. During the OF portion of the day Thien showed solid present arm strength with 80 MPH arm off of wet grass he showed quality carry and accuracy to his throws. His athleticism is sound enough for either OF corner running a present 7.25 60 yard dash with over 19 MPH of max run speed. The bat though for Thien carries the biggest impact currently as the RH hitter showed off strong present top end EV with a 101.4 MPH max that topped all players in attendance while averaging 91 MPH across this rounds of battting practice. He blasted a ball 388' to his pull side while producing 58% hard hit and sweet spot rates with 83% of his balls going in the air for a line drive or fly ball. |
|
Desi Whelan OF / 2B / Wilson High, CA / 2027Whelan put together another solid overall performance for our staff with his versatile defensive profile and solid present athletic ability standing out on the day. Desi is a compact, but athletically built 5'9 163 lbs. up the middle profile defender who shows long term 2B/CF or LF defensive value with his actions, athleticism and arm strength. Running a 7.18 60 on the day with a slightly uphill track there is a tick more speed in his game that should give him solid range in CF or at 2B while comfortably handling LF athletically. The arm for Whelan is quality with consistent low 80's MPH velocity in either the OF or the INF with accuracy to his throws. The LH hitter is a high contact line drive profile hitter who consistently squares the ball up with solid present exit velocites peaking at 93.9 MPH on the day, but averaging nearly 89 MPH on each ball he put in play while producing a 44% line drive rate with a total of 78% of his balls being hit in the air. Diving deeper on the quality of the contact Whelan produces at the plate with a 44% hard hit rate and 66% sweet spot rate there is plenty to like about the work Whelan does at the plate. |
|
Ben Shaw OF / LHP / Orange Lutheran, CA / 2027Hailing from the powerhouse Orange Lutherna program Shaw showed off a strong overall corner profile in the OF with interesting potential in his offensive ability. Strongly built at 6' 195 lbs. with emerging strength in his frame he is a quality runner at 7.22 seconds in the 60 with a tick more in the tank for him to be a solid athlete in an OF corner. His arm is best suited for LF at present with accuracy and arm strength around the 80 MPH range off of a wet OF surface. But, the value for an OF corner profile will be carried by what the player can do at the plate and Shaw demonstrates a sound profile here. With a strong top end EV that shows pull side impact during batting practice Shaw peaked at 96.8 MPH on his EV while crushing a 373' drive. Shaw has consistent loft in his swing which plays to a power profile with a 80% fly ball rate while showing sound ability to drive the ball with authority in the air with a 50% hard hit rate. |

Isaiah Camacho RHP / OF / Servite High School, CA / 2027Another Trinity League product in the ZT program the arsenal for Camacho was intriguing across the board. Wiry and athletically built at present in the 6' 150ish lbs. range there is solid present arm speed and sequencing in his delivery to produce quality stuff across the board. Camacho peaked at 86.8 MPH on his FB with plenty more in the tank as he looked relatively comfortable living at 84-86 with his mixure of a 2-seam and 4-seam FB. The 4-seam offering for Camacho shows solid present spin traits averaging over 2100 RPMs across his bullpen session. The CB and SLD for Camacho both work down in the zone or below consistently with solid present spin traits each averaging over 2300 RPMs of spin while the CB lived 75-77 MPH with more depth to the shape while the SLD lived at 77-78 MPH with increased horizontal break in the profile. He throws a high spin kick CHG with solid present ability living in the 78-80 MPH range and showed solid present control of the offering. With a 5 pitch mix and each pitch showing quality present velocity/life there is plenty of reason to see a long term starting profile for Camacho at the next level as an uncommitted 2027 out of Servite High School. |

Zeno Park C / 3B / La Mirada High, CA / 2027Park is an interesting switch hitting backstop who shows off solid to strong tools across the board as a defender and hitter. Compact, but solidly built in the 5'7 180ish lbs. range there is strength to hold up to the rigors of catching in how Park presents physically. He works low in his set up during bullpen sessions with a one-knee down stance, but ability to get low into his legs to work under pitches in the lower 1/2 of the strike zone. His glove is soft at receive to handle spin, but with plenty of strength in the wrists to stick/move velocity with quieter actions. There is solid present arm strength in the mid 70 MPH range, but with a consistently quick transfer and accuracy to the bag Park can produce 1.87 pop times while living in the sub 2.0 range during workouts that should play at a strong level during in game action. His switch hitting profile shows well from each side of the plate with strength in his RH swing that will peak north of 90+ MPH on his max EVs at present, but the LH swing for Park is intriguingly good. Over his LH round of BP Park was on the barrel with each swing while producing max EVs north of 90+ MPH hammered a 359' drive to the LH pull side. His overall rounds of batting practice were consistent with an average EV approaching 88 MPH, 45% hard hit rate, 54% sweet spot rate and was able to loft the ball consistently with a 61.6% fly ball rate (total of 82% of his contact was in the air). Park has transferred into La Mirada High School after spending the first two years of his high school career at Notre Dame High School in the Mission League. |

Kai Galang OF / LHP / Lakewood Christian Schools, CA / 2030Galang was one of the youngest players in attendance at the event being still in middle school as a 2030 graduate, but the foundation of skills the LHH - LHP showed off was intriguing. Wiry built in an athletic frame with room to dream he presently stands 5'11 150ish lbs. with lengthy limbs and room to fill. Galang produced a sound present 7.43 60 yard time with nearly 19 MPH of run speed at his max and will only get quicker as his frame adds strength in the coming years. He moves around the OF with sound present actions and flashed emerging arm strength reaching 76 MPH on his OF throws with some carry/accuracy to them. The LH swing for Galang is smooth and athletic with intriguing present metrics for the developing ZT product. Galang peaked at nearly 89 MPH of exit velocity (88.8 MPH) while averaging 81.8 MPH across his rounds of batting practice with a 327' max distance. His batted ball angles are intriguing with an 81% sweet spot rate to his balls in play and a total of 91% of his balls being hit in the air. The athleticism in Galang's operation on the position player side carries into way he does on the mound where he arm is clean and loose with emerging quality to his lower 1/2. The southpaw peaked at 73.6 MPH on his FB while living in the 69-72 MPH range across his bullpen session with arm side action to the offering. He spun an interesting low 60's CB that flashed solid present spin traits with over 2000 RPMs of average spin. Kai mixed in a solid present CHG in the low 60's with flashes of feel to kill spin on the offering to work off his present FB shape. Young and still plenty of room ahead for growth and development to the game of Galang, but this first look at the talented 2030 opened eyes to him being a name to follow in the years ahead. |

Nico Kaercher C / 2B / St. John Bosco High School, CA / 2030Kaercher was another middle school product in attendance who boasted an intriguing overall profile. With his high school destination to be St. John Bosco the Braves baseball program has to be excited about this future product. Athletically built at present with a 5'9 150ish lbs. frame the foundation of his physical build is sound with room to keep adding as he matures. Kaercher is a quality present athlete with a 7.78 60 time which can improve as he matures and provides quality athleticism to his profile behind the dish. Behind the dish is a place where the 2030 product shined bright on a cool winter morning in Orange County. He showed the top arm velocity of catchers in attendance at 74 MPH while popping one of the best times at 1.9 from a quick release with carry/accuracy to his throws (1.99 was his highest pop time of the day). Kaercher is a solid receiver with feel for how to present pitches on both spin/velocity and presents a quality target from a one-knee down set up. As strong as what Nico did on the defensive side of the game during the workout was his offensive profile was equally impressive. The RH hitter hammered the ball consistently with a peak of 91.6 MPH during batting practice while still averaging 86 MPH showing the consistency to his hitting ability. Flashing carry to the pull side when elevating the ball Nico peaked at 353' on his best bolt and 78% of his contact went in the air (lofting fly balls at a 55.6% clip). With a strong present foundation the upside for Kaercher is intriguing as he continues to mature physically and play against future high level competition in the Trinity League. |

Owen Kemp C / 1B / Moorpark High, CA / 2028Another young backstop who shined bright on the day was the Ventura County product Owen Kemp. Coming out of Moorpark High School he showed an intriguing frame at 6'2 190 lbs. presently with solid present strength and room to polish. His athleticism catches your eye for a young solidly built backstop as Kemp posted the fourth best 60 yard time of the day coming in at 7.2 seconds which translates into how he works behind the plate. His solid present quickness/athleticism helps him move well in the throw process beyond the dish posting 71 MPH arm velocities while living in the 2.03-2.06 range on his throws with accuracy. The RH hitter has strong present batted ball angles to go with sound present impact in his profile. Kemp produced a 83% sweet spot rates one of the best on the day with a max EV approaching 90 MPH while averaging 82.3 MPH on his batted ball data. The swing for Kemp is flatter playing to more line drive contact with a 58% line drive rate (92% ball in the air rate) with a gap to gap impact profile that produced a 320' gap line drive. Just a sophomore in high school Kemp has a strong present foundation of skills across the board as a backstop, athlete and RH hitter with plenty more to come as he continues to improve his game. |
|
Mayan De Nava SS / 2B / Polytechnic High, CA / 2027De Nava put together one of the better offensive performances of the day and backed it up with solid athletic ability and defensive actions. De Nava is athletically built at 6' 175 lbs. present with emerging strength to his frame while showing more room to add additional strength in the future. He showed sound athleticism on the day with a 7.31 60 yard time that has room to reduce as he matures to stick on the INF dirt with potential to remain up the middle while posting nearly 19 MPH of max run speed. The arm for De Nava is versatile with solid present strength at 82 MPH that should give him the ability to move around the INF dirt to find a home for him at the next level with 2B/3B comfortable and maybe a tick more strength needed to handle SS. But, no matter where the defensive home winds up being for Mayan his offensive ability has the potential to impact a next level lineup. A RH hitter he posted a top five max EV for the day at 95.7 MPH with a 337' max distance as he wore out the middle of the field with solid contact on the day. His batted bal angles are interesting with a 75% sweet spot rate for the day and several of those balls being hit with authority (posted a 58% hard hit rate on the day). Another uncommitted 2027 out of the day with his arrow pointed upwards for the coming years on the SoCal high school/travel baseball scene. |
