Ventura, Calif. - On Saturday, May 31st, the Prep Baseball California team hosted one of four Future Games Tryouts in Southern California at Mira Costa High School. This was an invite-only event for the class of 2027. All players in attendance were competing for a roster spot on Team SoCal at the 2025 Prep Baseball Futures Games to be held in July at the LakePoint Sports complex in Georgia.

A talented group of 30+ players made their way out to Mira Costa and participated both in a showcase-style workout and a simulated game-play event over the course of the day. Position players and two-way players started their day with electronic height, weight and grip testing before beginning their athletic testing by running a 60-yard dash on our laser timing system from VALD (providing 10-yard, 30-yard and 60-yard splits with a max run speed). The day continued with the batting practice portion of the event. All hitters in attendance had their swing metrics collected via Blast Motion bat sensors to provide valuable information on their swing. Batted ball data was provided from the portable Trackman B1 unit and all swings were recorded via video. From there, the group underwent a defensive evaluation with Outfielders making multiple throws to home plate on video with their arm strength being recorded via a Stalker radar gun. Next, the Infielders underwent defensive evaluations with video and arm strength readings, with 3Bs working out at their spot, middle infielders all working out at SS, and 1Bs from 1B. Finally, Catchers completed the defensive workout by making multiple throws to 2B with pop times and arm strength readings with video. The pitchers or two-way players in attendance each would face five live hitters during the simulated game portion of the day with all pitches being tracked via Trackman and video recorded of their deliveries and pitch shapes.

The competition was outstanding at Mira Costa, providing our staff with high-quality evaluations of these players for their chances at earning a Future Games roster invite. For today, we will highlight top 2027 performers of the day.

Note: A player's inclusion here does not guarantee a roster invite, simply they performed well during their tryout attendance.

J. Beckett Berg RHP / Notre Dame , CA / 2027

Berg is a name we have long been familiar with. He was selected for the 2023 Junior Future Games and made a good case on Saturday to return to LakePoint for the 2025 Future Games. Berg stepped in at a tall 6-foot-5.4-inches, weighing in at 192.7. He is coming off a strong sophomore season for Notre Dame, registering a 2.47 ERA across 34 innings, allowing only six walks. Berg’s size and advanced control profile him as a long-term starting pitcher with the ability to mix his pitches effectively. Berg ran the velocity up to 89.5 mph, but outside of that, showed feel for two secondaries with two more in development. In-game, Berg got stacked against multiple other names on this list and held his own. He struck out four batters and only allowed one ball in play, a fastball in on the hands, muscled into shallow CF. Berg’s entire profile of size, ability to spin it, and control his pitches is one that has no doubts of future improvements.

Parker Leoff SS / Redondo Union High, CA / 2027

Leoff has been one of the prototypical SoCal shortstops that has emerged in the 2027 class for good reason. He impressed for the Team USA 15u squad and has consistently shown a strong feel for the barrel within a smooth left-handed swing and clean fielding actions up the middle. It was more of the same of what we’ve seen from Leoff. He weighed in at 175.3 lbs, adding strength in season. The swing is on plane with a slight upward trajectory geared towards the gaps and immediately transferred into the gameplay. Leoff found the barrel right away and shot a hard ground ball into right field. He followed with two more swings in subsequent at-bats that generated hard contact. Leoff had a phenomenal year at Redondo Union, earning first-team all-league honors while hitting .351 with three home runs.

Ira Rootman OF / Harvard-Westlake, CA / 2027

Rootman was a standout at the Future Games Tryout last year, earning a spot on the team going into his sophomore year, a year younger than the majority of the team. Last year, he showed an advanced feel for the barrel with a strong athletic profile. That has only been improved since then as he hit .351 with 13 stolen bases and two home runs. Rootman opened the day with an event second 6.68 60-yd dash and proceeded to display high-level, loud, and consistent BP. He had a max EV of 101.3 mph with an average of 95.1 mph, showing feel for the pull side gap while also being able to spray the ball to all fields. Rootman then proceeded to pull down 91 mph from the outfield in the defensive portion of the workout. He followed the loud measurables with a hit and a blistering lineout to the right side in gameplay. As a second-team all-league selection at Harvard-Westlake, Rootman has continued to cement himself as a top outfielder and hitter in the 2027 class.

Carson Richter OF / Newbury Park, CA / 2027

When you see Richter, the profile screams athlete. Richter showcased just that, starting with an event topping 60-yard dash at 6.64 seconds. His top speed was recorded at 21.5 mph, 0.8 mph faster than the next person. While speed is a big part of his game, the physicality in the frame is also what catches the eye. At 6-foot-5, Richter weighs in at a filled-out 215.2 lbs with plenty of strength throughout the build. He showed off 84 mph bat speed and generated exit velocities in excess of 100 mph, with the top being 103.9 mph. He also threw 93 mph from the outfield. Richter hopped in game and immediately made an impact, smashing a double down the line in LF for an easy double. The raw tools and overall athleticism, paired with performance in game, make Richter a name to follow this summer.

Jake Kim 1B / Harvard-Westlake, CA / 2027

We heard plenty about Jake Kim throughout the spring as he earned second-team all Mission League honors with a league-leading tally of seven home runs and plenty of extra base hit production. Standing at 5-foot-11 and 203 lbs, Kim has a strong and built frame, starting with his lower half. The bat is what draws the eye, Kim displayed arguably the best and most consistent BP of the day. He peppered the gaps and drove balls out to dead center and to the pull side. Kim registered a max EV of 101.6 mph while averaging 96.7 mph throughout his two rounds of swings. His max distance clocked in at 398 ft. The swing is explosive with strong and quick hands and an engaged lower half. In game, Kim posted multiple competitive at-bats, collecting a hard line drive single in his first at-bat of the game. The ability to generate consistent hard contact to all fields is equally impressive as the gap-to-gap power potential.
