Each week, our staff updated the Power 25 and provides key talking points from games the week prior. This week, we see the No. 1 team hold steady with plenty of movement throughout, including three new teams jumping into the fold
Talking Points
- Breakdown of MoCo: Bethesda-Chevy Chase continues their dominance this spring after three big wins over Walter Johnson, Walt Whitman, and Blair to rise inside the top 6. Walt Whitman drops a spot after losing to BCC, however, picks up two wins over formidable opponents in Blair and Wootton, therefore, our confidence in the Vikings does not dwindle. Walter Johnson drops a spot after a loss to BCC, however, picks up two big wins over Sherwood and Churchill ahead of another huge week where the Wildcats face off with Blair, Whitman and Bethesda-Chevy Chase. Sherwood drops in the rankings following a loss to Walter Johnson, however, 2 wins over a tough Damascus squad and a scrappy Poolesville team keeps our confidence in the Warriors going forward. The big drop this week is Damascus, as the Swarmin’ Hornets pick up a win against a really good Wootton team, however drop two games to Sherwood and a big upset loss to Magruder.
- SMAC takeover in the bottom half: Chopticon jumps into the rankings for the first time this spring, now sitting 6-1 after a 3-0 week with wins over McDonough, Calvert, and Patuxent. Leonardtown takes a slight drop after a 2-1 week, including an upset loss to McDonough, however, pick up two wins over Southern Maryland Christian Academy and St. Charles. Patuxent goes 1-1 on the week, dropping two spots in this update after a win over North Point and a loss to Chopticon. Huntingtown jumps in the rankings for the first time after a 3-0 week and a 6-1 start to the season with their only loss coming to Patuxent. Keep eyes on Northern, as we have them just outside the rankings as they’re 7-1 and have been red hot as of late.
- Reservoir vs. River Hill: Our staff had long discussions over who should take over the number 23 spot. Reservoir went 1-1 last week after a dominant win over Atholton and then dropping a tough one run ballgame against a scrappy Marriotts Ridge team. River Hill is arguably one of the hottest teams across the state, now sitting at 8-0 on the year and three dominant wins last week, outsourcing their opponents 46-7. We believe Reservoir is the more battle-tested team so far, and possessing two top-end starters gives them the nod in our opinion. Questions will certainly be answered this week, as River Hill travels to Reservoir on Wednesday for a big mid-week matchup.
Winners
- John Carroll proved their worth last week, sweeping a top tier team in Calvert Hall and now sit at No. 2 in our Power 25. All one run victories, John Carroll proved that their pitching can win them games against formidable opponents.
- Broadneck continues to steamroll early this spring, sitting at 8-0 now after another undefeated week, beating Crofton, Northeast and Old Mill; 2 of which were in our Power 25 a week ago.
- Bethesda-Chevy Chase has been the eye-opening team thus far this spring, and their wins throughout the powerhouse that is Montgomery County has been utterly impressive. Last week, the Barons kept the train rolling with huge wins over Whitman, Walter Johnson and Blair and look ahead to another big week with key games against Damascus, Walter Johnson, and Churchill.
- Georgetown Prep has found their groove as of late, and two big wins last week over a tough St. Albans squad has the Hoyas rolling. One of those wins over St. Albans was a low scoring, battle tested affair against one of the top prep arms in the region in Myles Upchurch.
- Stephen Decatur bounces back after a 4-0 week with big wins over Wicomico, Parkside, Queen Anne’s and Delmar. The offense is starting to make some serious noise, as the pitching depth continues to be a staple led by Nate Berzonski.
Seeking Improvement
- Calvert Hall: Following a series sweep of a talented team in Loyola two weeks ago, the Cardinals got swept by John Carroll last week, all three in one run fashion. All three games were winnable games, however, the Cardinals found themselves on the losing end of each. Another big series this week ahead, as Calvert Hall locks horns with a talented pitching staff in Mount St. Joseph.
- Damascus: One of our favorite offenses to watch across the state, Damascus dropped two games last week, one to Sherwood and the other to Magruder. We drop the Swarmin’ Hornets considerably in this update, however, still have the utmost confidence in this offense to right the ship this week.
- Loyola Blakefield: The Dons broke their 6 game losing streak last week with a 7-1 victory over Mount St Joseph in their first game of the series, however then dropped their next two to lose the series. Inconsistency on both sides of the ball has been the downfall for the Dons all year, and they look to regain their winning ways with a three game series against Archbishop Curley this week.
- Quince Orchard: The Cougars started out the week well, scoring a combined 39 runs on the way to two blowout victories over Clarksburg and Rockville before being shutout by Northwest at the back end of the week. Look for this scrappy QO offense to right the ship this week.
