We have our fifth update to the 2025 VA/DC Power 25. While in last week's update we expected a bunch of movement that we did not see, this week is VERY different. From the rankings last week, there were ten teams that lost one game, two that lost multiple games, and two teams that did not play a single game all week. With all of the losses, there were four teams that moved out, one new team in the Top 10, and a lot of shuffling in the middle. Without further ado, we are going to highlight a few teams that have seen some movement in the Power 25.

VA/DC Power 25 Update Notes

+ St. John's had another three win week, moving them to 21-1. The Cadets had a big win over previous #7 Gainesville. The Cardinals led by four in the middle innings, only to give up five runs in the final three innings. The Cadets are battle tested and showed their upperclass talent once again in this one.

+ There are a few spring break tournament champions from last week, including the Commonwealth Classic Champion Gainesville Cardinals. Joining Gainesville as spring break tourney champs are Miller School (Forest Acres), Greenbrier Christian (H.I.T Steadman Division), and Madison (H.I.T Hatfield Division).

+ There are four new teams entering the rankings this week. New Kent, Maury, Deep Run, and Spotswood all make their first appearance in the rankings this spring. A little background on these teams:

  • New Kent is 8-1 with their only loss being a one run loss to Midlothian in the Deep Run Spring Break Tournament. In their nine games this season, the Trojans have given up a total of eleven runs and have scored a total of seventy-nine runs. They won a run rule game versus previously ranked Glen Allen, as well as three other games by mercy rule.
  • Maury is 7-1 and have been sitting on the outside for the last few weeks. As we noted last week, a win over a surging Cape Henry could move them in, and here we are. Their only loss is a one run loss to Mills Godwin, and the Commodores are the only team to defeat Greenbrier Christian this spring. They defeated the Gators 13-5 on VHSL opening day back in mid-March. As of today, Maury does not have a game versus a current ranked team the rest of the year, but should have tough tests versus Norfolk Academy, Hanover, and Landstown.
  • Deep Run is sitting at 8-2 and may have the best resume of any of these teams moving in. While they do have two losses, the Wildcats also have wins over Hanover, St. Christopher's, and Mechanicsville. Their losses came to Douglas Freeman by two runs and to Midlothian in the tournament championship by one run. They have played quite a few close games and while they do not have an explosive offense, they keep winning.
  • Spotswood is sitting at 8-1 and had a big win over previously undefeated Broadway. While the win alone would have probably gotten them in, it was how they did it that was the most impressive. Carter Lenz and Ty Howard threw a combined no-hitter and shutout the Gobblers by a score of 8-0. They have a shutout victory over East Rockingham, as well as convincing wins over Heritage (Leesburg), Albemarle, and Western Albemarle.

+ There are always questions about the rankings. How did this team lose and stay in? How do we have a better record than Team A, but we aren't ranked? How did another team jump us? Why did we fall five spots with one loss and another team just dropped two spots with a loss? Easiest answer, all losses are not the same. In addition to that, every single team's body of work is significantly different. Regardless of private school or public school, each team's record and performance is weighed differently. A Class 2 team in a well below average district that loses a game is WAAAYYY different than a Class 6 team losing a game in a loaded district. Why? The bigger school is usually more talented, not always, but usually. So that small school team, that has a much weaker schedule and a roster that is usually nowhere near as deep, when they lose a game versus a smaller school team, it knocks them down more than a team losing to a big powerhouse school. In addition to some of those notes, how you win/lose plays a factor in it as well. Are you winning the games you should win, in a convincing fashion, or are you playing close games, win or lose, versus teams that your roster is clearly more talented than. Are you playing above your ceiling, or playing to the level of the competition? Is there a constant trend with your team (i.e. not scoring runs versus teams with average to above average pitching)?Yes, at the end of the day, winning is what matters most, but how it is happening also plays a role.
