2025 Spring Team Preview: Phillips Exeter Academy (NH)

EXETER, N.H. - Despite losing seven of nine starters from a 9-12 squad that finished 4-6 in the Central New England Prep Baseball League, fifth-year head coach Tim Mitropoulos has high hopes for Phillips Exeter Academy in 2025.

“We are a program that is going to compete hard in all situations and strive to win,” explained Mitropoulos, who was an assistant for six years before taking over as head coach. “We want to be sound defensively and not give teams extra outs. At the plate, we want to battle every at-bat, put the ball in play and try to put pressure on the defense to make plays. Being flexible and showing you can win in many ways is something we try to do as well.”

Dana Mussulman, the ninth-rated junior catcher in New England, is being counted on to lead the way in the batting order for the Big Red after hitting .391 with 19 RBIs a year ago.

“He will be at the top of our lineup this season,” Mitropoulos said.

But the holes to fill are many, highlighted by graduates Ryan O’Leary, Will Cooke (Bowdoin), Landon Penney (Catholic) and Owen Tahnk (Harvard).

“We need to replace a lot of our lineup, so we will see who steps up and fills in the voids,”  Mitropoulos noted. “It will be competitive for those spots and we will see how it plays out.

“The key will be to play tough and relentless,” the head coach continued. “We always want to be competitive and execute at a high level.”

Right-handed pitcher Saahas Jetti, an Amherst College commit, and catcher/1B Joshua Schildcrout, a Babson College signee, headline the newcomers in line to make an impact along with Sean Noon (RHP/OF), Tyler Montecalvo (OF) and Ryan O’Keefe (LHP). Jetti is the 11th-rated 2024 right-handed pitcher in Iowa who is doing PG at Phillips Exeter.

“I think the strength of our group this year is our athleticism,” pointed out Mitropoulos. “We have some depth in the field, with players who can play multiple positions, so we can be creative with our lineups depending on who we are pitching or who the opponent is pitching.

“The commitment and focus of the group has been good so far,” Mitropoulos added. “If we can play together as a group and do what the teams need to be successful, by owning our roles and executing, we could be tough to beat.”

But Mitropoulos understands it will not be easy playing in the CNEPBL, which Phillips Exeter last won in 2020.

“I think it is the best league in Prep School, top to bottom,” Mitropoulos concluded. “Every league game you are facing a high-quality pitcher, if not two or three of them. And the top half of lineups are very challenging to get out. There are a lot of good players in our league, which makes it fun and highly competitive every weekend, as we play toward our league title.”
