2025 Spring Team Preview: South Portland (ME)

SOUTH PORTLAND, Me. - The South Portland baseball program has had a lot of success since Thomas Owens took over the program in 2011.

“Our program has been one of the most consistent in the state for the last 15 years,” pointed out Owens, who has a record of 177-69 since taking over the Red Riots after coaching previously at Niwot and Mead high schools in Colorado. “We have been in six out of the last nine regional championships having won three of those six, and we have won two state titles. We are known for our pitching. We have traditionally had one of the top pitching staffs in the state year in and year out.”

With two top hurlers back from a team that finished 10-6 in 2024, losing in the quarterfinals, pitching looks to once again be an area to build the team around in 2025.

“Our strengths are probably our pitching depth and our experience,” Owens noted. “We have a lot of players back who have a lot of experience.”

Senior Kason Lewis was the top pitcher a year ago and is back to anchor a staff that also includes junior left-hander Hudson Iacuessa. Lewis, a Southern Maine commit, was 5-1 with a 0.93 ERA last year while Iacuessa is a two-year starter who led the team in hitting at .382 in 2024.

Speaking of experience, Easton Healy is back for his third season at shortstop after batting .333 with a team-best 15 RBIs last year. A Southern Maine commit, the South Portland senior will be joined up the middle by returning second baseman Corbin Voisine, who carried a .306 average as a junior.

“This is a team that is hungry and ready to compete,” explained Owens, who only lost two starters from a year ago in Curtis Metcalf (now playing soccer at St. Joseph’s College) and Alex Horton, last year’s center fielder who is concentrating on football. “They are a close-knit group who are excited to get started. We have some speed, some pitching and should be pretty strong defensively.”

Newcomers being counted on include a pair of sophomores, with Brady Main expected to contribute on the mound and Jude Charltray helping out in the infield.

“We need to improve at the plate and put pressure on teams,” Owens noted. “We need to compete against the top teams in our league by staying aggressive at the plate, throwing strikes and putting pressure on defenses with our baserunning.”

It is a league that brings high praise from Owens.

“The league is extremely deep,” Owens said about the Southwestern Maine Activities Association. “There are a lot of good teams with some of the top teams, in my opinion, Gorham, Scarborough, Biddeford, Thornton Academy, Massabesic and Falmouth.

“If we stay healthy and continue to improve, I think that we should be right in the mix at the end of the season.”
