Cane Mehling Named Prep Baseball NC Pitcher of the Week
Cane Mehling, RHP, Ashley High School, Class of 2025
Cane Mehling earns Pitcher of the Week honors after a stellar performance on the mound for Ashley High School. The senior right-hander threw a complete game one-hitter against New Hanover, striking out six and allowing no earned runs. Mehling’s efficiency and command were key in leading Ashley to a 2-0 week, anchoring the pitching staff with a dominant outing in a crucial conference matchup.
Mehling was recently covered in the Spring Break Scout Blog. Below is the excerpt from his outing vs. Grace Christian Academy. Mehling committed to Wingate University shortly after this scout blog was published.
Cane Mehling, RHP, Ashley HS, 2025
One of the top uncommitted players remaining in the state. Athletic presence and a high level competitor. Fired a complete game, giving up just 1 run on 7 hits, striking out 11 and only walking 1 vs. #7 Grace Christian. Strike thrower with good feel for his fastball and breaking ball. Fastball ranged 85-88 early and held 86-87 into the 7th. Showed feel for both sides of the plate. Fastball to arm side had late, boring action into right handed hitters. Movement created issues for hitters. Also showed ability to elevate with ride. Fastball played above the radar reading with the carry through the zone. Spin ranged 1900-2100rpm. Tight, late, downer action on the breaking ball at 78-80. Spin ranged 2400-2550rpm. Sharp action from a similar window as the riding fastball allowed the fastball to get chase. Breaking ball depth and late tilt created issues for hitters. Had the ability to land the breaking ball and expand down, or away with the pitch. Average frame. Limited projection. Stands 6-foot, 175 pounds. Loose hips and good mover down the hill. Athletic actions. Works level and on-line, landing in-line and square with the foot-strike. Long arm swing. Loose through an over-the-top slot. Athletic release. Should make a quick impact at his next stop.
