#10 Cuthbertson Rallies from 8-0 Hole to Stun #19 Weddington, 10–8

WAXHAW, N.C. – In a Top 25 showdown to kick off a three-game conference series, #10 Cuthbertson pulled off a thrilling comeback win over #19 Weddington, rallying from an early 8-0 deficit to claim Game 1, 10–8 on Tuesday night.

Weddington exploded for six runs in the 2nd, highlighted by a two-run double from Cooper Gandossy and a two-run single by Liam Johnson. The Warriors added two more in the 3rd on an error and a James Yanz RBI single, taking what seemed to be a commanding 8-0 lead.

But the Cavs didn’t panic.

Ryan Virgillo got Cuthbertson on the board in the 3rd, and then came the game-changing 4th inning. After a leadoff single from Nathan Wilson, the Cavs loaded the bases and followed with a string of RBI singles by Logan James and Robert Johnstone. A second hit by Wilson in the same inning tied the game at 8, and Ryan Watters’ sacrifice fly gave the Cavaliers their first lead of the night.

In the 6th, Cuthbertson added insurance when Jackson Waeghe singled in Wilson, who had his third hit and second run scored of the game.

On the mound, Michael Clemente recovered from a shaky start and gave the Cavs 6.2 gritty innings. After surrendering 8 runs in the first three frames, he retired 12 of the next 14 batters, allowing Cuthbertson’s offense the chance to complete the comeback. Logan James came on to record the final out and earn the save.
