2025 Spring Team Preview: Scarborough (ME)

SCARBOROUGH, Me. - It was a season to remember in 2024, with Scarborough not only winning its first league championship, but also taking home a Class A state title for the second time in the past five seasons played.

A 20-1 record pushed head coach Wes Ridlon’s mark with the Red Storm to 58-15 since taking over the program in 2020.

“Scarborough baseball prides itself in playing strong fundamental baseball in all parts of the game,” Ridlon explained. “For pitchers, it’s about throwing strikes, challenging hitters, pitching to defense, and trusting their strong defense to make plays. Defensively, it’s about making the routine play, knocking the ball down, and hitting cutoffs for the outfielders. Offensively, it’s about putting the ball in play, making the opposing team make a play, getting on base and using our team speed to manufacture some runs.”

With five key returning players, the prospects for another successful campaign are strong.

“A big strength for us should be our pitching and defense - we feel strongly that we should be able to keep games close,” Ridlon said. “A weakness or question mark for us going into the year is what we will get offensively. We graduated a large group of seniors last year so we will be a little inexperienced early in the year.”

Although Zak Sanders (.410, 6-0 pitching with five saves), Mason Porter (.321), Tyler Archambault (.348), Patrick McCue (.280) and Lewis Moynihan leave big shoes to fill, Ridlon has plenty of experience back, led by Erik Swenson, Matthew Fallona, Cam Wellman, Finn Coburn and Ryan Shugars.

Swenson and Shugars are expected to form a strong one-two punch on the mound in the 2025 campaign. The 38th-rated senior right-handed pitcher in New England, Swenson was 7-0 with a 0.62 ERA, fanning 74 in 45.1 innings last season. Shugars finished 4-0 with a 0.54 ERA over 26 frames.

Fallona batted .350, Coburn, a junior middle infielder, hit .346 and Wellman, who is called by Ridlon “the best defensive outfielder in the state”, had a .405 OBP with 10 stolen bases.

“The players show up everyday with a good attitude and a good work ethic to improve their skills,” Ridlon noted. “They’re very good with taking the coaching that’s given to them and applying it in practice and game situations. Overall, this is a great group of players.”

Senior outfielder Noah Magliozzi and junior pitcher Nate Masters are newcomers that could make an impact according to Ridlon, who points to a number of deciding factors this season.

“The key to success will be offensively being to get on base and put pressure on our opponents on the base paths and make them make plays,” Ridlon said. “We will count on strong pitching and defense, and we will need some younger players to step up and be productive for us to be successful.”

After winning the SMAA for the first time last season, Scarborough has hopes of making it two in a row, both in the league and come tournament time.

“It is always a strong league each year and this year it will be strong again,” Ridlon concluded. “There’s going to be a lot of competition and every team has the ability to beat anyone.

“Our expectation is that we continue to get better each day and learn from the experiences throughout the year. Our goal is always to be playing our best baseball at the end of the year when it’s time for playoffs.”
