Prep Baseball Illinois Player of the Week: Josh Fleming

By: Peter Hamot
Assistant Scouting Director, Illinois & Wisconsin

York has consistently been one of the top teams in the state over the last couple of years and they haven’t missed a beat despite graduating recent draft pick and former ace of the staff, Ryan Sloan. The Dukes currently sit at 15-3 on the year and No. 19 in our Power 25, much in part to the contributions of INF Josh Fleming (2025; Grand Valley State commit), who tore it up this past week. The senior infielder went 10-for-16 with three home runs, one triple, two doubles, eight RBIs, 10 runs scored, two walks and one stolen base. For his outstanding performance, Fleming has been named this week’s Player of the Week.

Fleming got his week started in a 6-5 win over Lyons Township. Facing one of the top arms in the state, Fleming put together a 2-for-4 performance with a double, RBI and a run scored.

The following day in a 13-6 win over Lyon Township, Fleming once again had no trouble against a top arm in the state, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

He kept on rolling into Wednesday in a 16-6 win over Proviso West, going 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.

The Dukes would end up losing their next two games of the week, but Fleming did not slow down one bit. In a 5-4 loss to Lyons on Thursday, Fleming went 2-for-2 with two home runs, two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. He finished off his week in a 6-4 loss to Willowbrook on Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a home run, double, RBI and two runs scored.

Fleming is no stranger to our staff, currently coming in as the No. 80 ranked player in the state. He’s been a key piece on the last couple Dukes teams, and this year is no different as he’s perhaps even taken on a bigger role. He’s leading the team in a number of different hitting categories, such as batting average (.490), OBP (.609), slugging percentage (.902), home runs (4), doubles (7), runs scored (28) and overall hits (25). Fleming has been a consistent performer in front of our staff, and his bat should certainly continue to play at the next level with other tools to pair.

Scouting Report

8/18/24

Verbally committed to Grand Valley State.

3/25/24

Uncommitted. The No. 41 ranked player in the state turned in a strong day at the plate on Monday collecting two hits off of a high-level arm in the same class. The right-handed hitter has a simple, hitterish setup in the box standing in at a presently strong 6-foot-1, 185-pounds. He uses a leg kick trigger for timing to go with a flat swing path that works direct to the ball. Fleming also impressed with his aggressiveness at the plate, attacking fastballs early in counts. The three-hole hitter for the Dukes is a name to continue to follow in the state’s 2025 class.

We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within tomorrow's Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that.
