WIAA Power 25: Update

For Wisconsin, the weather hasn’t been all that bad to start this spring season. It’s been cold, sure, but every team on the Power 25 has played at least two games and most have been four or more. That allowed us to have enough information and ammunition to update our top-25 rankings for the first time this season. We previously released our Preseason Power 25 in the lead-up to opening day, but it’s time to see where things stand today.

In this update, four teams dropped off the Power 25, which paved the way for four new programs to debut on it in 2025.

NEW NO. 1

+ No. 1 Monona Grove (4-0): In our first update of the 2025 season, we’ve already got a new No. 1-ranked squad. The Silver Eagles are 4-0 overall, though just 1-0 in Wisconsin, after they opened their spring season with three straight wins down in Florida, two coming against Kentucky programs and one from Illinois. On Saturday night, in their first game back home, they traveled to Oconomowoc to play a solid Kettle Moraine squad that just downed a top-10-ranked team the night before. It took a little bit for Monona Grove to restart their offense after a week-plus layoff, but once they did, it was all systems go.

This was a great early season look at the Silver Eagles. It’s a true team effort with them, and they’re deep up and down the lineup, with stout defense across the diamond as well as some frontline arms. For example, senior athlete and center fielder, Chase Yinko, is our reigning Player of the Week and he’s been hitting down toward the bottom of the order for this group, just as an indication of the quality of bats they have further up the top of the order.

They’re a totally worthy No. 1 squad and there’s a chance they could even run the table from this spot – don’t count it out.

INSIDE THE TOP-10

Elsewhere inside the top-10, there’s not a ton more movement, considering most of these top-10-ranked squads took care of business in the first two weeks of the season. No. 2 Muskego (3-1) moved down a single spot after dropping their season opener, but they won three straight since and they could be back at No. 1 in no time, especially given the quality of their schedule.

Behind them, No. 3 Hudson (4-0), No. 4 Kimberly (2-0), No. 5 Westosha Central (4-0), and No. 6 Sun Prairie East (3-0) each remain in the same spots as they were ranked in the preseason, and none suffered a defeat in the first two weeks of the season. Among them, Westosha has some of the best wins so far, sweeping the season series against Southern Lakes rivals Union Grove last week. Falcons starter RHP/1B Joe Suokko (UW-Parkside commit) has been excellent in the early going, and they’ve gotten some quality offensive performances out of a variety of hitters thus far.

+ No. 7 Arrowhead (2-1) remains in their same place this update despite a loss in their season-opener. The bats came alive against the two teams they beat this weekend from Eau Claire, and they have one of the best pitchers in the Midwest, Peter Kussow (Louisville), to lean on once Classic Eight play heats up – as soon as tomorrow, actually, when the Warhawks will host LHP Ryan Brennecke (Wake Forest) and Oconomowoc.

+ No. 10 De Pere (2-1) was close to sweeping Bay Port over the weekend, but the Pirates slugged a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to prevent that from happening. Still, De Pere has maybe even outperformed preseason hopes so far. Despite being the defending champs, they look almost totally different from last year’s team, and yet, the offense has been firing in the early going, which bodes well for them as the season rolls on.

ON-THE-RISE

+ No. 8 Pewaukee (5-0): We got a great look at the Pirates over the weekend in a matchup with previously undefeated Reedsburg Area, and it became an opportunity to show themselves as a Division 2 state favorite in the early going. RHP Owen Dobberstein (Evangel) is a real No. 1-type arm in the WIAA, and he showed it Saturday over four shutout innings. The lineup is also senior-heavy, and even the non-seniors have been slugging so far. It’s a really solid group and once that has lofty goals in 2025. They moved up three spots in this update.

+ No. 9 Madison Memorial (4-0): The Spartans enter the top-10 after a strong 4-0 start to the spring. It’s been a pretty balanced effort for Madison Memorial – they’ve gotten some big innings from several different arms all while getting boosts from a variety of names on offense. Though, INF Caleb Liggon (2026) has been doing the heavy lifting lately. He hit his second homer of the spring on Saturday in a game in which he also doubled twice. Junior two-way Brayden Banyai (UW-Milwaukee) also got the win against Sun Prairie West while Caleb’s twin brother OF Ezra Liggon (2026) went 4-for-4 in that win last week.

+ No. 13 Kenosha St. Joseph (5-1): Even though they’re in WIAA’s Division 3, the Lancers cannot be taken lightly. The offense can keep up with just about anyone else’s in the state and there’s enough pitching here to keep them in competitive non-conference games against opponents in higher divisions, like Brookfield East, for example, which they beat last week 5-2, making up for a 6-1 loss to No. 11 Germantown, which was their first loss of the spring.

+ No. 16 Edgewood (4-0): The reigning WIAA Division 2 champs look really sharp at the beginning of this spring season. Senior leader MIF Preston Yaucher (Penn State) is hitting .538 so far this season, surely with all-state-type defense at shortstop. But Yaucher’s not the only one off to a hot start offensively, meanwhile they have a 2.00 ERA as a team in 28 innings this spring. They also just handed Fort Atkinson its first loss on Saturday, 6-3.

+ No. 19 Wisconsin Lutheran (4-0): WISCO got its conference play started on the right foot with a two-game sweep of New Berlin West, though it wasn’t easy. Still, it was the latest example that this sophomore class can be relied upon as the team’s talented foundation, while key members of the junior and senior classes make up the rest of this daily lineup. Those are actually a pair of quality wins for the D2 squad, considering they faced some velocity from two New Berlin West arms, and the sophomores at the top of the lineup proved to be up for the task.

WELCOME

+ No. 18 Badger (5-1): The Badgers enter the Power 25 after a strong first two weeks, getting off to a 5-1 start on the year. The offense has started the year hot, with multiple impact bats throughout the lineup including CF Matthew O’Grady Jr. (2026) who is hitting .536 so far on the season. Uncommitted senior INF/OF Zach Walton (2025) who is hitting .454 on the season hitting mostly out of the leadoff spot for the Badgers.

+ No. 20 New Richmond (6-0): Starting the year perfect at 6-0 with multiple run rule victories over that span. Seniors Aiden Eckert (Bethel) and Max Kretovics (Bethel) have played key roles in their early season success, Eckert operating as the Tigers ace and has already strung together multiple strong outings. Kretovics has reached base safely in all six games so far this season serving as the team’s leadoff hitter.

+ No. 22 Pulaski (5-1): The Red Raiders have outscored their opponents 68-15 through six games as their offense starts the season hot. Starting the season off on a three game winning streak, picking up a Power 25 win against Hortonville in a 9-7 finish after an eight run seventh inning gave them the lead.

+ No. 24 Oak Creek (2-1): The Knights enter the Power 25 after a 2-1 start, winning the season series against Indian Trail, the No. 13 ranked team at the time. A lot of new faces on this year’s roster as they graduated a large senior class last year, seven newcomers made their varsity debut, freshman infielder Camden Jeske has made his presence felt early on, stepping up as one of their top hitters early on.
