VENTURA, CALIF. - As the entirety of the of the California High School sections are underway with regular season games Prep Baseball California will be highlighting weekly games of the week with some of the best matchups from all over the Golden State.

This week our staff has picked these four matchups as their top games of the week from around the State of California:

Game Preview:  

With the top two teams in the Ambassador League set to face off in a two-game set the No. 9 Aquinas Falcons enter with an 18-2 record on the strength of both a dominant offense (164 runs scored on the spring) and stellar pitching staff (64 runs allowed on the spring). The Falcons have relied on the dynamic offensive abilities of Tena, Greenhouse, Olazaba, Davidson and Egan who are all hitting in the upper portions of the .300 mark with Lopez hitting .448 in a consistent part time role. Greenhouse fronts the Falcons with 21 runs scored and 23 RBIs while eight of his 24 hits have gone for extra bases (both marks lead the Aquinas offense). On the mound the trio of Alzaga, Egan and Busby have all throwing 21+ innings on the spring while Alzaga has posted a 1.64 ERA, Egan sits at .95 and Busby at 3.00 with the trio combining for nine of the Falcons 18 wins on the mound while Egan has added two saves in relief. 

For Arrowhead Christian they enter in second place in the Ambassador League at 6-1 in league play (lone loss coming to Aquinas) with a 13-9 overall record. Their offense has been strong all spring scoring 118 runs in their 22 games and the pitching staff has been solid allowing 74 runs in those 22 games. Both Trejo and Toth enter the series with averages north of .400 on the spring while Toth leads the squad with 24 RBIs, 18 Runs scored, 11 doubles, and 28 hits on the spring. Fr. Martinez tops the Eagles with three homers and is hitting .355 on the season with Pierce and Rivera both over .300 in regular playing time. On the mound the trio of Bennett, Estrada and Mahoney lead the Eagles with 25+ innings pitched (Mahoney is tops with 33 innings) and all striking out around one batter per inning pitched (Mahoney tops them with 47 Ks). The trio has also posted ERAs of 3.04 for Estrada, 2.20 for Bennett and 1.70 for Mahoney. Humphries, Toth, Rivera and Martinez have all thrown over 10 innings this spring with Humphries sporting a .82 ERA, Toth at 2.21, Martinez at 1.17 and Rivera at 1.27 in their work this spring. The starter trio of Bennett, Estrada and Mahoney have combined to earn nine of the 13 wins this spring for the Eagles with Toth and Humphries each claiming one win of their own.

Series Preview:  

The top two squads in the competitive Foothill League will face off in a two-game set with the Hart Hawks and West Ranch Wildcats entering separated by one game at the top of the standings. For the second year in a row this series will likely determine the the Foothill League title winner (Hart earned the title in 2024 before heading off to win the CIF-SS D2 title). 

Hart enters this series at 11-8, but is 6-1 in the Foothille League having scored 125 runs in their 21 games and have allowed 79 runs just over 3/4 of the way through their season. Offensively, the duo of McCarty and Daly who have hit to a clip just over .400 in consistent playing time while Hogen, Werther, Ryder Frithsmith, and Whitson have posted averages over .300 in consistent playing time. Daly and Werther both top the team with five doubles, Whitson has their lone homer on the spring with Rhodes adding one of their three triples on the spring. Werther and Hogen have been the primary forces driving in runs while Cavarretta, Hogen, Chathle and Ryder Frithsmith have all scored 11+ runs on the season. Their pitching staff has featured Cummings and Purfoy as the main arms both having thrown 28.1 innings for Cummings and 32.1 for Purfoy with each striking out over one batter per inning and posting ERAs of 3.46 for Cummings and 1.52 for Purfoy. Rhodes, Maymo and Wobrock are the next three arms in innings pitched with each striking out around one batter per inning pitched. 

West Ranch sits in first-place in the Foothill League with a 7-1 record during league play and an overall record of 15-8 while scoring 167 runs in their 23 games and allowing 110 runs. Their offense has been paced by foursome of Diaz, Manning, Murr, and Omar Gutierrez with averages at .394 or higher with Gutierrez and Diaz both over .400 in full time roles. Their lineup is deep with talented hitters as Clayton, Stoll, Hu and Wilson all boast averages well over .300 deep into the spring in full time roles. As team they have slugged eight homer runs with the two from Murr topping the squad, while both Diaz and Murr have six doubles on the spring and the duo of Stoll and Hu have five. Diaz tops the Wildcats with 20 RBIs while Hu has 18, Gutierrez has 17 and Clayton has 16 on the season with Stoll and Hu each having scored over 20 runs this season. On the mound Manning has been the workhorse with 36.1 innings pitched, 58 Ks, just 32 baserunners allowed (20 Hits / 12 BBs) and an ERA of 1.16 with four wins on the spring. Orlando Gutierrez has been the top secondary arm throwing 28.1 innings with 24 Ks winning four games against just one loss. Murr and Aaden LaRoe have each thrown significant innings with Murr posting a 1.68 ERA over his 16.2 IP while striking out 25 batters.

Game Preview:  

The top two squads in the Sierra Valley League enter this series both undefeated in league play with Liberty Ranch sitting at 10-0 and Bradshaw Christian at 9-0 with the winner likely to be very much in the drivers seat for a title.

Bradshaw Christian has been dominant on each side of the game scoring 159 runs over their 19 games played, but even more impressive is the miniscule 23 runs they have allowed in their 19 games. The offensive attack for The Pride is topped by Crosno who is hitting .522 with seven of his 24 hits this spring going for extra bases. Rickert, Quach and Wolf are all over .400 late into the spring with Quach topping the team in doubles at seven and tied for the lead in RBIs at 17. Carter and Fujii-Sisler are both hitting in the mid-.300's for The Pride. On the mound the top arms for Bradshaw Christian have been Crosno and Tidwell with Crosno throwing 28 innings striking out 44 batters while allowing just 13 baserunners all spring (six hits and seven BBs) with an astounding 0.00 ERA and five wins. Tidwell for his part has thrown 24.1 innings with 18 Ks, posting a .58 ERA, two wins and a save. After the top two arms The Pride has gotten strong work from Quach, Rickert and Wiser with each throwing 12+ innings this spring while Wiser has struck out 24 batters in his 12 innings with just three base runners allowed (two hits / one BB) and both Quach and Rickert having struck out over one batter per inning pitched. Wiser has an ERA of 0.00, Quach at 1.94 and Rickert at 2.14.

Liberty Ranch has been strong on the spring with a 10-0 league record and sitting at 16-5-1 on the year with their offense having produced 125 runs on the year and their pitching staff holding opponents to just 55 runs over 22 games. Lecompte has been the key piece on offense with an average at .444, driving in 26 runs, scoring 15 runs, doubling six times with one triple. After Lecompte the offense has received strong production from House, Nelson, Moe and Adversalo with Moe blasting two of the Hawks three homers on the year. Moe has also added four doubles, two triples and scored 19 runs with House driving in 15 runs for second on the team. On the mound the workhorses have been Moe with 53.1 innings pitched and Lecompte with 32.1 innings on the bump. Moe has struck out 80 hitters on the year against just 16 BBs and 33 hits allowed for WHIP under 1.00 and Lecompte has struck out 48 hitters against seven BBs with 22 hits and a WHIP under 1.00. Moe's ERA stands at 0.39 on the year with Lecompte at 1.30. Erias and Tapia have both proved solid in their work on the mound with Erias tossing 22 innings and posting a 1.91 ERA while Tapia has thrown 10 innings with a 0.70 ERA.

Game Preview:  

The two San Diego based power programs square off in an early spring one vs. two showdown with each sitting at 2-1 in Western League play and hoping a series win can provide a clearer path to a title at the end of the spring season.

St. Augustine enters with an overall record of 12-6, but is in the midst of a very strong stretch having won seven of their last eight games and for the season have scored 106 runs in their 18 games and allowed 68 runs in that span. Dunne, Choi, Konja, Nakanelua and Wick are all hitting over .300 deep into the spring with Tompkins topping the team at .392. Dunne has provided a powerful impact with him having knocked four of the teams seven homers on the spring and has the teams lone triple with a pair of doubles and a team leading 15 RBIs to his stat line. Wick and Tompkins both top the team with six doubles and Wick leads the team with 17 runs scored. On the mound the Texas commit Boles has struck out 40 in his 25 innings of work while winning three games against one loss with an ERA of 1.68, but Popkins tops the team with 30 IP and six wins while adding 34 Ks and a 2.10 ERA on the spring. Mares, Higgins, and Haskett have all thrown 10+ innings on the year and are striking out around one batter per inning pitched with Higgins sporting a 0.51 ERA and Haskett sitting at 0.64.

Patrick Henry returns to the game of the week stage after taking two out of three over Pt. Loma in their Western League opener as the Games of the Week in San Diego last week and now boast a 11-6-1 record with 84 runs scored in those 18 games with just 47 runs allowed. Their offense has relied on the bat of Brooke who is hitting .388 on the spring with four doubles, three homers, 18 RBIs and 11 runs scored topping the team in avg., doubles, homers and RBIs. Mestman has been the next top performer sitting at .356 with 21 hits (tops the team) two doubles and one triple and a team leading 13 runs scored and team leading seven stolen bases. Bobo has posted an average right at .300 late into the spring. Cappelletti and the Gunn brothers continue to be the top arms for the Patriots with the trio having thrown a combined 91.2 innings this spring while striking out 108 batters with just 36 BBs and 59 hits allowed in their work. Cappelletti has an ERA at 0.69, B. Gunn at 1.21 and J. Gunn at 1.95 so far this spring. Moloney has been strong in his 13 innings of work with 14 Ks, 4 BBs, seven hits allowed and an ERA at .54 while the talented Waite has added a 1.62 ERA in 4.1 innings of work and struck out seven hitters with Bobo striking out 10 in eight innings while Brum has eight Ks in 4.1 IP.
