2025 Spring Team Preview: Detroit Catholic Central

NOVI - Detroit Catholic Central looks to take that next step after two consecutive years of losing in the tournament to the eventual state champion.

“We want to bring back what we did in 1999 when we went 38-1 and won state and then the next year we were back in the state final,” explained Ryan Rogowski, whose Shamrocks led Northville 2-1 in the sixth inning before falling in the tourney a year ago after being eliminated by Novi in 2023. “We want to bring back that toughness.”

A Catholic League title is one more obstacle that Catholic Central is hoping to overcome.

“We haven’t won the Catholic League since 2001, my junior year,” Rogowski pointed out.

There is a plan in place to make it happen.

“We want to instill discipline and knowledge they learn in school,” noted the fifth-year head coach, whose 2024 edition finished with a record of 27-12. “Our opponent is ourselves. It’s the battle within ourselves. We know what we can do and we’re so excited for this year.”

A deep pitching staff is a big reason for the excitement, despite losing Jayden Pydyn for the year due to a torn labrum in football. The fifth-rated senior outfielder in the state, an Army commit for both football and baseball who also pitches, is expected to be back at the end of May and will be the DH.

Ben Asumussen, the 29th-ranked 2025 right-handed pitcher in Michigan, a Pitt commit, headlines an impressive group of pitchers that includes senior Drew Leidal, a Northwood signee, and Cincinnati commit Dylan Fairchild, the second-rated junior shortstop in the state who will pitch and play short.

Junior southpaws Dominic Recchione, Andrew Mahoney and Landin Bonnell bring more promise on the mound along with senior right-handers Jack Murphy, Will Miller, Colin Lloyd and Joe Suiter adding depth. Recchione is the 11th-rated sophomore LHP in Michigan, Mahoney the second-ranked 2026 left-handed pitcher in the state, Murphy a Kalamazoo recruit who can also play outfield, and Miller the 14th-ranked senior outfielder in Michigan and a Tiffin commit.

“We have the pitching and athleticism now to compete,” Rogowski said. “Experience means a lot and we have a lot of three- and four-year guys. Maybe we were lacking that experience before and that’s why we’ve lost those tough games. But this group is experienced and they’re motivated to win.”

Senior Carson Wyrybkowki, an Alma commit rated 17th in the state among 2025 catchers, and Bennett Thompson, the top-ranked junior catcher in Michigan and a Michigan State recruit who hit .340 a year ago, will both see time behind the plate with Nick Garnick, the 86th-ranked junior in the state, and Cam Swearingen, another in the 2026 class, adding depth.

The junior trio of Brad Bartolucci, Evan Pappy and Nick Garnick are battling to play first base after Tommy Maxwell, the 20th-rated 2026 RHP in the state and a potential pitching ace for the Shamrocks as well as starting first baseman, was sidelined with an injury for his junior year.

Sophomore Kyle Davis and freshman Luke Fairchild, Dylan’s younger brother, are competing to play second base with Fairchild and Thompson bringing experience to the shortstop position.

Lloyd and Micky Laser, a junior who can also pitch, are potential third basemen for Catholic Central.

Jaxon Gatt, the top-ranked sophomore outfielder in Michigan and another potential pitch, will be in center field with the injury to Pydyn. Murphy, Miller, Aidan Janosik, Joe Treder and Lincoln Thompson are competing for time in the outfield. Treder, the 15th-ranked senior outfielder in the state, is a Kalamazoo recruit while Thompson, the 11th-ranked junior outfielder in Michigan, is the twin brother of Bennett.

“I like that they’re hungry,” Rogowski said. “They’ve been around a while. They’ve been in close games but not made that turn.

“They go to work every day,” Rogowski added in conclusion. “I don’t tell them expectations, they know what they are.”

It all starts on March 27 with a game against Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.
