The Prep Baseball Virginia/DC staff makes their way across the Commonwealth and DC throughout the spring to assist high school players in gathering evaluations, including video and some data, that allow our staff to assist in the potential recruitment of student-athletes.
Take a look at a few games and players that stood out over the past week of play.

Battlefield

Josh Gunning 3B / RHP / Battlefield, VA / 2028Gunning continues to impress in his freshman campaign by stepping up on the big stage. He made multiple plays at shortstop on the night, showing off some athleticism and arm strength to get them out of innings. At the plate his biggest hit of the night was a double into left. He creates some whip through the zone with his bat speed that works towards the middle to pull side. It is a quiet confidence in his game that slows the game down and makes it look easy for a freshman. He continues to come up big in moments that help out this team each time out.

Nico Moritz-Toledo OF / 1B / Battlefield, VA / 2027There aren’t many players that have a premium run tool that can change the game instantly like Moritz-Toledo. He showed that in different ways on Wednesday night as he ran gap to gap to make outs in the outfield with ease. He later showed the run tool in the game with a 4.05 turn on a back-side double to bring in a run. At the plate he shows versatility with his bunting ability and whole-field approach that can turn a simple single into a double. There is a patient approach at the plate that shows some discipline. He is a table setter for this offense at the top of the order that can give opposing pitchers and catchers problems on any given night with his speed.

|
Josh Weppner RHP / OF / Battlefield, VA / 2026Weppner continues to be a reliable arm for the Bobcats as he turned in another quality outing. He threw five strong innings, pitching to contact and making outs. The fastball was in the 86-88 range that induced ground balls. He had success in the zone with a short-shaped slider that got some swing and misses in the zone. He fills up the zone with multiple pitches and attacks the zone often. He continues to show some of the arm depth that this staff can rely on down the stretch.

Colonial Forge
|
Michael Guckian OF / RHP / COLONIAL FORGE HIGH, VA / 2026It was a multi-hit night for Guckian as he displayed his hitting ability throughout the night. In his first at-bat he jumped on the first pitch that he saw and sent a hard-hit line drive into left for a single. He would come back up later in the game and work a count with two strikes and pick up a double into the right-center gap. The swing has shortened up since the fall, and it has played well in games so far this spring. He has the ability to use all fields with impact. He shows good rhythm in the load with an uphill barrel path. Defensively it is a corner profile but, you are buying a left-handed bat that can impact the baseball.

Fluvanna
|
R Easton Loving OF / SS / Fluvanna , VA / 2026Loving turned in a strong performance at the plate, displaying a whole-field approach with a couple of hits. It is a quiet, balanced setup with a level barrel path. He shows comfortability with using the backside of the field. Defensively he showed some fluid actions with above-average arm strength at shortstop. It is a lean, athletic frame that still has room to add strength.

Goochland
|
Jackson Bell OF / 1B / GOOCHLAND HIGH, VA / 2026It was a standout not at the plate for Bell, as he caught barrels each time he stepped up to the plate. It was a multi-hit night as he stayed level and hit line drives. It is a physical frame that has the strength to run the baseball out of the yard in an instant. His strength plays gap to gap with plenty of impact. The contact rate has picked up and has translated to more offensive success. Defensively he was serviceable at third base, making plays and showing off some arm strength. The bat continues to make strides as a consistent impact bat.

James Madison

Chase Dorsey SS / 2B / James Madison HS, VA / 2026Dorsey was impactful all over the diamond on Friday night to help contribute to the win. He made multiple plays at shortstop with ease, showing off athleticism and range. There are fluid actions with soft hands to consistently make plays. He was able to make throws on the run with arm strength as well. Offensively, he was on time for a fastball in his second at-bat and sent a line drive out of dead center for a solo home run for his one hit of the night. There is lean strength in the frame that displays strength to the middle and pull side. If the bat can stay consistent, then he brings a lot of value to go along with the sure-handed glove for the Warhawks.

Niko Papathanasiou 1B / Madison, VA / 2025It was a two-hit night for Papathanasiou as he made loud contact with a backside double and a line drive single into right. He brings plenty of physicality with strength that works from gap to gap. It is a quiet, balanced setup with an uphill barrel path. The hands are quick, with above-average bat speed. This is my second look this spring, and he looked much more comfortable with covering the outer half and using the opposite field. He brings leadership qualities and wants to step up in the big moments.

Nathan Toundreault RHP / James Madison, VA / 2025It was an impressive start as he threw a complete game shutout in the victory. He established the fastball early, getting ahead in counts at 85-88, touching 89 once in the first. The fastball is heavy that he worked inside and out, which generated weak contact. The confidence in the curveball got better as he got deeper in the outing that got some chases low in the zone. He filled up the zone with multiple pitches and got rid of hitters in a timely manner. It was a big performance in an important district contest.

Oakton
|
Dawson Givens RHP / C / Oakton, VA / 2026It was a short sample size from Givens in his one inning of relief, but he was efficient and effective in his outing. He generated some quick contact early in the counts to put up a quick zero in his outing. The fastball was up to 85 with some arm-side run that generated ground balls to right-handed hitters. He worked with a quick pace, attacking the strike zone early. It is a longer arm action with late intent from a high three-fourths slot. While it was only one inning of work, it was an impressive outing with the efficiency in the zone and making quick outs.
|
Riverbend
![]() |
Luke Alexander RHP / SS / Riverbend, VA / 2025Alexander got the start on the mound for the Bears and was strong, getting the win in a complete game outing. He was effective attacking the zone early with the fastball in the 86-88 range that induced some weak contact for outs. The slider was the go-to pitch late in counts that got plenty of swing and misses in the zone with late depth. He finished the night with six strikeouts and only giving up one earned run. It’s just another quality start that we are used to seeing from Alexander when he steps on the mound.

|
Ben Neal C / 2B / Riverbend, VA / 2025Neal was a big part of the offense at the top of the order, turning in a two-hit night for the Bears. To lead off the game, he worked into a two strike count and recognized a breaking ball sending it into left for a single. He would come back up to the plate later and hit a two-run home run to extend the lead. It is a compact frame that works gap to gap with more of the strength working to the pull side. He is competitive at the plate and brings the energy at the top of the order for this team.
|
West Springfield
|
Patrick Sido OF / LHP / WEST SPRINGFIELD HIGH, VA / 2025The added physicality was on display for Sido as he had a two-hit night, including a double later in the night. The frame has added significant strength, and that has translated into games. He has the ability to impact gap to gap and be a run producer at the top of the lineup. It is a simple load with a quick, uphill barrel path that looks to lift the baseball. The strides that he has made will continue to play a part in his success now and in the future.

|
Kaleb Williams SS / 3B / WEST SPRINGFIELD HIGH, VA / 2025There aren’t too many hitters that have had the track record of hitting like he has had over the last few years. He turned in another day in the office with another multi-hit night, showing off the hit tool. It is lean strength and athleticism in the frame that plays on both sides of the ball. He shows adjustability and barrel control in the swing to be able to make mid-swing adjustments. He moves well in the infield with fluid actions and the ability to throw from different slots. The role he plays for this team is vital for their success as the jump starter to this offense.
