2025 Spring Team Preview: Divine Child

DEARBORN - Could this be a “special season” for Divine Child? It is a strong possibility according to head coach Jeremy Shay.

“This year’s team is going to compete each and every inning,” said the third-year head coach, who has a 39-34 record in his first two seasons in charge of the program after serving as an assistant coach from 2016-2022. “The seniors are hungry and know that they can do something special this season if they want it. Most of them have been playing together since they were in Little League together so they all have chemistry.”

Six returnees are expected to lead the squad this season, four that saw time on the mound.

“Our strengths for this season are going to be our pitching and defense,” Shay explained. “We have most of our pitchers returning this year, but we’re going to have to find ways to score runs to help our pitchers out and win ball games.”

Cameron Niehaus, a Central Michigan commit, was 5-4 with 78 strikeouts in 56.1 innings and a 1.74 ERA a year ago and headlines the returnees. The 15th-rated senior right-handed pitcher in the state will be joined in the rotation by Ian Hall. The 48th-ranked junior RHP in Michigan was 3-4 with a 2.34 ERA, striking out 60 in 50.2 innings in 2024.

Andrew Ryan and Dallas Terski also saw action on the hill during their sophomore campaigns, Ryan finishing 4-1 and Terski 1-0, and both are also being counted on at the plate. Ryan, the 14th-rated 2026 shortstop in the state, batted .324 with 32 runs, 34 walks and 15 RBIs while Terski, the second-ranked junior first baseman in Michigan, hit .301 with 23 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Matthew Esparza and Ethan Davis are other key returnees for the Falcons. Both seniors, Esparza hit .271 with 22 RBIs and seven doubles a year ago while Davis batted .267 with 21 walks.

“The keys to success this season will be if we are able to find ways to score runs,” Shay noted. “Our pitching and defense will be able to keep us in a lot of games, we will just need to outscore the other teams.

“The seniors will have to take control of the team and we will go as far as they want to go this season,” Shay added. “We have a great group of players that are ready to compete each game, we’ll just have to put it all together when the time comes.”

Sophomores Brennen Bush, Nick Andre, Finn Cameron, Mason Cubr and Brody Scott are newcomers being counted on to help make up for the loss of three key graduates in Connor Rayha (.302, 6-1 on the mound), Tyler Eby (.254, outfield standout) and Everett Shumaker (.276, 14 RBIs).

Divine Child, which has won five state championships, including four in a seven year period from 2004-2010, “is known for being a well-run program with a winning tradition,” according to Shay, whose team finished 24-14 last season, losing to Grosse Pointe Liggett 1-0 in the Division 2 regional finals.

The Falcons did win the AA Catholic High School League title and have hopes of repeating that accomplishment this year, though it will not be easy with Liggett joining the AA this season. Jackson Lumen Christi, which lost in the Division 3 state finals a year ago, and Cardinal Mooney, losers in the Division 4 state semifinals last season, are others expected to make a run at a league title according to Shay.

“Our league is going to be tough as always,” Shay concluded.
