Prep Baseball Louisiana 2025 Game of the Week: University Lab vs. Parkview Baptist (Week 9)

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Last week, we went up to North Louisiana to see a big-time matchup between West Monroe and Benton.  In what turned out to be a low scoring pitcher's duel, West Monroe came out on top by a score of 4-3, and the two teams could end up seeing each other again in the Non-Select Division I playoffs.

Today marks the beginning of the last full week of the regular season, which also means it is our last Game of the Week for the 2025 season.  We're going to end things off with a bang, as our Week 9 Game of the Week will feature District 6-3A Rivals University Lab and Parkview Baptist.  The Cubs and Eagles last met in the semifinals of last year's Select Division III playoffs, in what turned out to be one of the best games of the entire 2024 LHSAA state tournament.  University Lab ended up beating Parkview Baptist by a score of 2-1 in 9 innings to advance to the title game, where they would end up beating St. Charles Catholic to secure their first-ever baseball State Championship.  Needless to say, these two teams are itching to get back on the field to face each other once again this week.  Stay connected with us on all our social media platforms for real-time updates, exclusive highlights, and comprehensive coverage of what promises to be an epic Week 9 Game of the Week!

GAME OF THE WEEK PREVIEW

Our Week 9 Game of the Week features two teams that know each extremely well with University Lab taking on Parkview Baptist.  The District 6-3A rivals last met in the semifinal round of the 2024 Select Division III playoffs, in what turned out to be one of the most exciting games of the entire 2024 state tournament.  University Lab ended up taking down Parkview Baptist by a score of 2-1 in the 9 inning thriller.  The stakes for this year's two-game district series are just as high, as Parkview Baptist is currently ranked #1 in the LHSAA's Power Ratings and University Lab is #2.

University Lab

The defending Select Division III State Champion University Lab Cubs are heating up at just the right time. Winners of 10 of their last 11 games, their only recent blemish came against reigning Select Division I State Champion Catholic (BR). With momentum on their side, the Cubs are eyeing a strong finish to the regular season as they prepare to defend their 2024 State Title.

One of the biggest questions heading into the 2025 season for first-year head coach Jon Ramsey was how to replace ace Camden Sunstrom, the team’s go-to arm from last year. While no single pitcher has filled that void, the Cubs have leaned on a deep and talented trio in juniors Brody Mayeux and Grant Sunstrom, along with sophomore Grant Vollmer.

Mayeux has been steady, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.29 ERA and 26 strikeouts over 34 innings. Grant Sunstrom, Camden’s younger brother and a Louisiana Tech commit, has emerged as a strikeout machine with 38 punchouts in 39.2 innings to go along with a 3-2 record and a sparkling 1.59 ERA. Then there’s Vollmer, a towering 6’7” sophomore, who has impressed with a 5-1 record and a minuscule 0.93 ERA across 30 innings.

Offensively, the Cubs are clicking as well—scoring 92 runs over their last 11 games. Senior shortstop Jake McCann, the hero of last year’s championship game and a Belhaven signee, has been red-hot, batting .500 over his last four games with two doubles, three RBIs, five runs scored, and four stolen bases. Fellow senior Ethan Hopkins is also swinging it well, hitting .417 over that same stretch with four RBIs and five runs scored. Outfielder Caden Connor, a Delgado CC commit, is hitting .333 over his last four games and has added four runs and four stolen bases.

Junior third baseman Lane Mixon, a key piece from last year’s title run and a Northwestern State commit, continues to be one of the team’s most reliable bats. Over his last four games, he’s gone 5-for-14 (.357) with a triple, three RBIs, and seven runs scored.

Even without their ace from last season, University Lab has found a winning formula behind a balanced pitching staff and a surging offense that may be even more dangerous than last year’s group. They'll face a big test this week in a two-game set against Parkview Baptist, a team loaded with one of the state’s deepest pitching staffs. But if the past few weeks are any indication, the Cubs look more than ready for the challenge.

Parkview Baptist

After falling just short in the 2024 state semifinals in a 2-1 extra-inning battle against University Lab, the Parkview Baptist Eagles entered 2025 with unfinished business—and so far, they’ve looked every bit like a team on a mission.

Led by head coach Phillip Hawke, the Eagles have surged to a 24-6 record heading into this week’s much-anticipated rematch with the Cubs. They’ve won 15 of their last 16 games, with their lone loss during that stretch coming to top-ranked Live Oak, and are currently playing their best baseball of the season.

The heart of this year’s squad lies on the mound, where Parkview boasts arguably the deepest and most dominant pitching staff in the state. At the top of the rotation is a pair of Louisiana-Lafayette recruits in seniors Samuel Mitchell and Cade Durbin. Mitchell has been nothing short of elite this spring, holding a 4-0 record and 1.41 ERA with 62 strikeouts in just 30.2 innings. He’s proven himself against top-tier competition including Lutcher, Rummel, Central (BR), and Texas power Lutheran South Academy. Durbin, a former Future Gamer, has been just as effective, matching Mitchell with a 4-0 record, 1.41 ERA, and adding a save to his resume. He’s also struck out 51 hitters in 30.2 innings.

Senior Will Robinson has been a valuable weapon out of the bullpen. The Belhaven recruit owns a 2-1 record, 1.26 ERA, and a save with 27 strikeouts over 16.2 innings of work.

The Eagles have also gotten quality innings from junior transfer Logan Sorrel, who’s posted a 5-2 record with a 1.60 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 30.2 innings. Fellow junior Henry Beckers has pitched to a 4-1 record and 2.23 ERA across 22 innings with 32 strikeouts, while sophomore left-hander Jake Wooten has impressed in a swingman role—owning a 2-1 record, 1.59 ERA, and 26 strikeouts over 17.2 innings.

While the pitching has been lights out, Parkview's offense has recently found its groove. After some inconsistency earlier in the season, the Eagles exploded for 82 runs across six games last week—showing just how dangerous they can be when the bats are rolling.

Senior shortstop Kelan Guidry, a Jones College commit, continues to set the tone at the top of the order. Over his last five games, he’s hitting .364 (4-for-11) with a home run, two doubles, four RBIs, seven runs scored, and four stolen bases.

The senior trio of Micah Landry, Noah Graves, and Tyler Barrient have also been producing in a big way. Landry is hitting .455 over his last five games with three RBIs and three runs scored. Graves has driven in six and scored seven while hitting .364. Barrient has been on fire, going 6-for-13 (.462) with a home run and 10 RBIs in his last five contests.

Sophomore outfielder Clayton Fontenot, one of the top talents in Louisiana’s 2027 class, has been red-hot at the plate. Over his last week of action, he’s 8-for-11 (.727) with two home runs, 10 RBIs, seven runs scored, and three stolen bases—a dynamic blend of power and speed.

Junior outfielder Seth DeGeorge is another name to watch. He’s 5-for-10 in his last few games with two doubles, four RBIs, four runs scored, and three stolen bases. Junior two-way player Henry Beckers has been swinging it well too, going 4-for-10 with a triple and three runs scored over his last four games.

If Parkview Baptist’s offense can continue to produce at even a fraction of last week’s clip, they’ll be a nightmare matchup for anyone in the postseason. With a deep and battle-tested pitching staff leading the charge, the Eagles are built to make another deep run—this time with their sights set firmly on a state title.

It’s only fitting that we wrap up our 2025 Game of the Week segment with a classic district rivalry—one that’s grown into one of the state’s most compelling matchups in recent years. University Lab and Parkview Baptist enter this week’s series as the top two teams in the latest LHSAA Power Rankings, with the Eagles holding the No. 1 spot and the Cubs right behind at No. 2. Could U-High leapfrog Parkview with a two-game sweep? Maybe—but no matter the outcome, both programs look poised to host deep playoff runs well into May.

This showdown is about more than just seeding—this is a battle for the District 6-3A crown, hometown bragging rights, and maybe even momentum heading into the postseason. Ever since University Lab ended Parkview’s 2024 season in a dramatic semifinal, this series has been circled on the calendar. Expect a playoff-like atmosphere in both games—and don’t be surprised if this is just the first chapter in a rivalry that could write its biggest chapter yet in the Select Division III State Championship series.
