Top Profiles of 2020: No. 2 Stone Lawless

Austin Sharp
Director of Scouting

We continue our countdown of the Top Profiles of 2020 with '23 C Stone Lawless (Huntsville) who comes in at No. 2. Lawless, a Tennessee commit, is the #2 ranked player in the Alabama 2023 class and he is also ranked as the #58 player in the country.

The 6-3 200 pound catcher is a physical specimen that not only looks the part, but plays the part. Lawless shows clean actions behind the plate and his catch and throw skills have continued to progess over the years. At the recent Knights South Scout Day on December 6, the '23 grad showed consistent pop times in the range of 1.94- 2.01. Lawless could very easily play both corner infield positions in the future as well because the bat is the big draw here. No doubting the offensive abilities as Lawless has proved over time that he is a premier offensive talent in the 2023 class. He shows some definite lift in the swing plan and shows power to both gaps with exit velo speed up to 92 mph (Trackman).

Scouting Report

1/18/20

At 3B Lawless showed very nice lateral movement and the glove presentation was solid. Natural instincts with the feet and there is no questions with the arm strength (84 mph across the infield). Slightly open with the feet in the batters box and an upright stance. The hands work easily and the ball really comes off the barrel. He has some tilt in the swing path and does a nice job creating backspin off the barrel. There is some violence in the barrel. Behind the plate he looks very smooth and receives all parts of the zone well. Presents a very low target and showed nicely sticking borderline pitches.

1.20.19-  A very impressive looking 2023 grad that has the physical makeup now.  Shoulder nice set up with the quiet glove and the ability to block balls in the dirt. Impressive low 2.0 pop times for a young player.  Fundamentally sound in all that he does. Does a nice job of creating a rhythm at the plate with his hands and set up. Has some lift in his swing but keeps the barrel through the zone a long time. Has some big time pull pop. A definite 2023 name to remember. Ultra  projectable.
