2025 Non-Public State Finals: Preview

The Non-Public State finals for the NJSIAA begins tomorrow, as Don Bosco Prep takes on Christian Brothers for the Group A championship and Pope John and Gloucester Catholic battle for the Group B championship. Today, we will be taking a look at the remaining teams, matchups, and standout players for each program. 

Don Bosco Prep Vs. Christian Brothers

This is an intriguing matchup for the Group A championship as both programs were the number one seed in their respective sectional brackets. Don Bosco is currently 24-2 and hasen't lost a game since April 26th, currently riding a 16 game win streak. The Ironmen have a potent offense, led by junior Maryland commit Chase Bagley (.438 AVG, 25 RBI, 5 2B, 16 BB, 13 HBP) and senior Virginia commit Nick Becker (.407 AVG, 6 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 24 RBI). Anthony Costello, a Charleston Southern commit, has been lights out on the mound for the Ironmen, carring a 0.96 ERA in 36.1 IP, allowing five ER all season. Costello has struck out 53 and walked 23 on the season. Christian Brothers comes in to this matchup at 22-4, with their pitching staff dominating in the state tournament. Danny DiTuillo continues to impress on the mound and Dylan Iwanyk, a Michigan commit, has been huge for CB. Iwanyk carries a sub one ERA with 40 strikeouts in 29 innings. Danny Tsimbinos is hitting .500 on the season with a homer and 28 RBIs. We will find out who will be crowned a State Champion for Group A, tomorrow at 7:00 PM at Don Bosco Prep.

Gloucester Catholic Vs. Pope John

Gloucester Catholic was the top seed from their sectional bracket and comes in to this game with a 23-3 record, along with an eight game win streak, allowing just 11 runs in that span. Braeden Lipoff, an East Carolina commit, is having a impressive year with the bat, hitting .467 along with 11 doubles, four home runs, and 30 RBIs. Jack Mustaro has also been big contributer on offense for the Rams, hitting .455, with five doubles, a triple, and two homers as well as 26 runs driven in. Jackson Smallets has done the heavy lifting for the pitching staff, tossing 63 innings, carrying a 1.00 ERA with 63 strikeouts and 13 walks. Pope John comes in as a underdog, coming in with a 13-13 record, Scranton commit WIll Ryan has been a top performer on offense for Pope John (.344 AVG, 6 2B, 3 3B, 15 SB) as well as Scranton commit Jack Portman (.345 AVG, 8 2B, 2 3B, 5 HR), On the mound, Portman has thrown some quality innings, as well as Beckett Weeks, in 34 innings of work, weeks has allowed eight earned runs, struck out 41, and walked 10. This is an interesting matchup, taking plave tomorrow at 4:00 PM at Pope John.
