SANTA ANA, CALIF. - The Third Annual Future Games Tryout series kicked off with a return trip to Deadeaux Field on the campus of Mater Dei High School where over 40 players participated in the tryout with the hopes of representing Team SoCal at the 2025 Prep Baseball Future Games.
Players participated both in a showcase-style workout followed by a nine inning game. Position players and two-way players started their day with electronic height, weight and grip testing before beginning their athletic testing by running a 60-yard dash on our laser timing system from VALD (providing 10 yard, 30 yard and 60 yard splits with a max run speed). From there the group underwent a defensive evaluation with outfielders making multiple throws to 3B and home plate with their arm strength being recorded via a Stalker radar gun. Next up, the Infielders underwent defensive evaluations with video and arm strength readings with 3Bs working out at their spot, middle infielders all working out at shortstop and first basemen from their corner position. Finally, catchers completed the defensive workout by making multiple throws to second base with pop times and arm strength readings.
During the batting practice portion of the day all hitters in attendance had their swing metrics gathered via Blast Motion technologies to provide valuable information on their swing while batted ball data was provided via Trackman technologies. The pitchers or two-way players in attendance each would face five live hitters during the game portion of the day with all pitches being tracked via Trackman technologies.
On a day full of standout players from around SoCal, the competition was outstanding, providing our staff with high quality evaluations of these players for their chances at earning a Future Games roster invite. For today we will highlight, top performers of the day.
Note: A player's inclusion here does not guarantee a roster invite, simply they performed well during their tryout attendance.

Zion Martinez SS / 2B / Norco High, CA / 2027Another loud performance from the middle infielder from Norco High School. The left-handed swing is among the purest in the class and the power continues to show itself both in batting practice and in-game. After launching an HR that was 101mph off the bat at the IE Preseason All-State, Martinez nearly topped that with another no-doubt HR in-game that was 99mph off the bat. He would later add a base hit that was 93mph off the bat while mixing in a walk as well. One of the top ‘27 middle infielders, Martinez’s left-handed bat and fast, soft hands on the dirt are current carrying tools. |

Elyjah Mason 3B / OF / Huntington Beach High, CA / 2027A late addition to the event, Mason made arguably the biggest case for making Team SoCal at the Future Games. Mason led things off with an event low 6.66 laser timed sixty yard dash showing athleticism in his running action on his 6’2” 167lb frame. During the workout portion of the event, Mason showed athletic movements on the dirt with fast hands and desirable footwork at the hot corner. His BP was two rounds of barrels that sprayed the gaps with line drives. But, it was during the game where Mason put it all together and really stood out. He started with a standup triple to the right center field gap that was 96mph off the bat, he followed with a walk and a double to the left center field gap that was 92mph off the bat. Simple and rhythmic stroke at the plate with a knack for getting the barrel to the ball consistently. |

Charlie Cummings SS / 2B / Sierra Canyon School, CA / 2027Rankings StateRank: 196 / POS: 56
fter a strong showing at the Preseason All-State in January, Cummings returned to the tryout looking like a whole new player that has added strength to the frame that is resulting in loud at-bats in the game and louder batting practice results. In fact, Cummings has added 13 pounds to his 6’0” frame weighing in at a solid 173.3lbs. Cummings finished with three hits in four at-bats that included a pair of doubles. With an impressive ability to spoil pitches, it’s the improved barrel control that really stands out with Cummings. And now, thanks to the added strength, the bloopers we saw before are now line drives to the gaps. |

Luke Bacon C / OF / Santiago High, CA / 2027Rankings StateRank: 81 / POS: 12
We have seen Bacon at a number of Prep Baseball California events as well as during the spring with his Arlington High School team. An athletic catcher, 7.09 laser timed 60, Bacon continues to impress with his overall game that included a 74mph arm behind the plate with pop times in the 2.01-2.20 range. After spraying line drives to all fields during batting practice, he continued to show off the hit tool during the game portion that resulted in a three-for-three day. He had a single to right-center-field, a single to left field, and finished with a double to left-center-field showing feel for the barrel that left our staff impressed with the hit tool ability. |

Codey Brown C / 1B / Ayala , CA / 2027Rankings StateRank: 48 / POS: 4
Coming off a strong sophomore season at Ayala High School where Brown hit over .300, the hyper-athletic catcher continued to impress at the tryout with his ability to catch-and-throw with the best of them in his class. His batting practice was loud over two rounds with line drive after line drive. Arm strength and accuracy continue to impress as all throws during the workout and in-game were on the bag giving the shortstop a chance at a tag. While did not register a hit in-game, he barrelled two balls over 90mph that were caught in the outfield. |

Chase Mena OF / LHP / San Marino, CA / 2027Kicking things off with a 6.94 laser timed 60, Mena set the table for what would be an eye opening event for the talented rising junior. Mena showed off a strong, accurate arm (84mph) from the outfield during the workout portion with throws that flashed carry and were all on the bag at third or on the plate at home. His batting practice was a line drive filled two rounds where he showed the ability to use all fields. However, Mena saved the best for last with a three-hit game that featured a double and two singles with all barreled hits registering over 87mph. Instinctive on the bases, Mena uses the same attribute in the outfield where gets good jumps on balls put in play with direct routes to the ball. |
