Michigan Diamond Notes: May 19-25
What a week it was for Howell, which went 5-0-1 in six games of action, and Daniel Hampton was a big part of it.
The 42nd-ranked junior in Michigan went 3-3 with a home run in a 6-1 victory over D-1 21st-ranked Hartland in the KLAA championship game. Hampton also had a 3-3 outing with three RBIs in a mercy-rule win over Bay City Western, the second-ranked D-1 team in the state.
Hampton finished the week going 7-13 and is now batting .441 with three home runs, 14 doubles and 32 RBIs for the No. 10 Division 1 team in Michigan, which last week also had a 4-2 win over Flushing a 10-0 triumph over Swartz Creek.

STRONG PITCHING
It was quite a pitching duel when Troy beat West Bloomfield 1-0 to split the OAA White title.
Trevor Marshall threw a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and one walk for Troy while Slade Moore suffered the tough-luck defeat for West Bloomfield, the No. 17 Division 1 team in Michigan, with five innings of two-hit ball, giving up three walks and one earned run while fanning 15.
Marshall, the 10th-ranked senior LHP, is a Western Michigan signee while Moore, the No. 4 2025 left-handed pitcher in the state and No. 53 in the country, is a Michigan commit.
There were more good outings reported on the hill…
- Freshman Desman Lawless struck out 15 and did not walk a batter in a four-hit shutout for North Adams-Jerome. It marked the fourth win in five decisions for the right-hander, who improved his ERA on the season to 2.471 with 62 Ks in 28.1 innings.
- Cam Niehaus fired a two-hit five-inning shutout giving Divine Child the CHSL Cardinal Division title. The 13th-ranked senior RHP in the state, a Central Michigan commit, walked one while fanning nine.
- Behind the pitching of Jax Racht, Niles won its second straight Wolverine Conference title. The fourth-rated junior right-handed pitcher in Michigan fanned 10, walked three and gave up one run in the three-hit performance for the No. 11 Division 3 team.
- Greenhills won another CHSL St. Anne Division title thanks to the pitching of Nick Roney. The 19th-ranked 2026 southpaw in the state struck out 10 in five innings, surrendering two runs on two hits in beating Royal Oak, 3-2. Roney has 94 Ks in 45 innings this year for the sixth-ranked D-3 squad.
- Coastal Carolina commit Case Bosch threw a four-hit shutout giving Jenison a share of the OK Green. The 52nd-rated senior left-handed pitcher in the nation and number three in Michigan struck out eight and walked two for the fifth-ranked D-1 team.
- New Boston Huron’s Dayton Miller fired a no-hitter at Milan. The 62nd-ranked junior in the state fanned 11 and allowed five free passes in seven innings for the No. 6 Division 2 team in Michigan.
- Jackson Miller threw 12.2 scoreless innings to open up the week before giving up an unearned run on Saturday. A Bowling Green recruit ranked seventh among senior left-handed pitchers in Michigan, struck out 21, walked four and allowed three hits on the week for Lakeland, the No. 10 D-1 squad.
- Hartland defeated Franklin in the KLAA tournament behind the three-hit shutout pitching of Michael Zielinski. The 29th-ranked senior in Michigan, a Wright State commit, retired 13 on strikeouts for the 18th-ranked D-2 team in the state.
- Senior right-hander Cross Darby shut out Swartz Creek, giving Goodrich a win in the Flint Metro championship game.
HOT STICKS
Tristin Fisher scored a dozen runs and stole the same number of bases during an impressive week of play for Shepherd.
The sophomore shortstop went 10-16 with three doubles and two walks while also bringing home seven runs.
Fisher is now 30-30 on the season stealing bases with 35 runs, 24 RBIs, 13 walks and reaching on HBP seven times while carrying a .363 batting average with eight two-base hits.
There were other standouts with the bat worth mentioning…
- Sam King, a teammate of Fisher, hit four singles, two doubles and walked four times in 13 plate appearances while scoring 10 runs on the week. The 14th-rated junior first baseman in the state also drove in five and swiped five bases for Shepherd. King, who also has 40 Ks in 36 innings pitching, is batting .362 on the year with 29 runs, 24 RBIs, 19 walks, 12 stolen bases, six doubles and a pair of home runs.
- A two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning by Talen Pilz capped off a three-run rally giving Greenhills its second consecutive CHSL St. Anne Division title with a 3-2 victory over Royal Oak. The 14th-rated senior third baseman in Michigan is a Pomona-Pitzer College recruit.
- Broder Katke had four multi-hit games during an 8-13 week that included eight RBIs and a double. The No. 1 sophomore in the state and 11th-ranked 2027 catcher in the country, went 4-7 with a double and RBI in the semifinals and finals leading Brother Rice to the CHSL championship. Rice is the No. 6 D-1 team.
- Luke Charlton hit a pair of home runs and drove in eight during a 6-14 week for Lutheran Northwest, the 15th-ranked Division 3 team. The junior catcher had two doubles and scored three runs.
- Jace Davis established a new Woodhaven school career mark with hit number 128. The 16th-rated senior shortstop in Michigan, a Lansing CC commit, went 7-11 with two doubles, a triple, five runs and five RBIs. Woodhaven is ranked 20th in Division 1.
- Just a junior, Brody Tesnow broke the Capac High School record for career hits with his 111th on Wednesday.
TWO-WAY STANDOUTS
If things go right this week, Wyatt Mosley will reach the 500-mark for career strikeouts at Dansville.
The 60th-rated senior left-handed pitcher in the country retired 32 on strikes this past week in just 12 innings while allowing one earned run and two walks, winning one of two decisions with the loss coming to Portland St. Patrick, the second-ranked Division 4 squad in Michigan.
The No. 5 2025 southpaw in the state has a season ERA of 0.394, fanning 118 in 52.2 innings while permitting only 15 hits.
Ranked ninth in the state among all seniors, Mosley is also batting .425 with a .563 slugging percentage and 16 RBIs.
There were others that had big weeks pitching and hitting…
- Justin St. Antoine is closing in on the .500 batting mark for the season after a 6-9 week that included two doubles and a home run, five RBIs, four runs and two stolen bases. The seventh-rated senior shortstop in the state is hitting .493 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 23 steals in 23 attempts. The Kellogg Community College commit also threw a three-hitter last week for Forest Hills Northern, allowing one earned run while striking out nine in seven frames.
- Ryland Watters hit a two-run home run to lead Rochester Adams to a 2-1 win over Stoney Creek in Pre-District post-season action. The sixth-rated junior LHP in Michigan went 6.1 innings for the victory, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out nine for the third-ranked D-1 team in the state.
TEAM NOTES
- North Adams-Jerome went 3-0 on the week, outscoring the opposition 17-0 behind the pitching of Connor McKay and Lawless.
- Forest Hills, now 35-1 on the year, secured the OK White with a sweep of East Grand Rapids, pushing the winning streak of the top-ranked Division 2 team in the state to 34.
- Mattawan, the 23rd-ranked Division 1 team, won the SMAC conference title to improve to 23-8 on the year.
