Group 3 State Tournament: Day 1 Wrap Up

Day one of the NJSIAA State Tournament wrapped up with plenty of excitement across all brackets. Each bracket featured eight games, narrowing the field down to just eight teams remaining in each. The opening round delivered its fair share of upsets, as lower-seeded teams rose to the occasion and knocked off favorites. There were also standout performances from both teams and individual players, setting the tone for what promises to be an intense and competitive tournament. The action picks back up tomorrow with the quarterfinal round, as the remaining teams look to take one step closer to the ultimate goal: winning three more games and being crowned state champion. Today, we will be taking a look at the results from yesterday's group 3 games.

NORTH 1 BRACKET

+ In North 1, 12th seeded Paramus upset Dark Horse candidate Fort Lee, 8-3 in the first round. Montclair State commit Chris Matesic went a complete game and punched out 14 for Paramus. 10th seeded Nutley upset 7th seeded Northern Highlands, 3-2 in 10 innings. Seton Hall commit Drew Slomkowski went 7 IP allowing just two hits and striking out seven for Nutley. Keith Jiratatprasot homered for Nutley.

NORTH 2 BRACKET

+ In North 2, 12th seeded Carteret topped fifth seeded North Plainfield, 3-1. Second seeded Millburn slid by 15th seeded Matawan, 1-0. Sawyer Stein drove home the lone run of the game and Charlie Wall went a complete game scattering seven hits and punching out six.

CENTRAL BRACKET

+ In the Central, 12th seeded Hamilton West topped 5th seeded Jackson Memorial, 5-2. 10th seeded Steinert beat 7th seeded Colts Neck, 5-1.

SOUTH BRACKET

+ In the South, all top seeded advanced to the second round. Sixth seeded Shawnee beat Moorestown 6-4. West Virginia commit Tim Dougherty got the win in relief, striking out all four batters he faced.
