Prep Baseball Illinois Player of the Week: Jack Wheeler

By: Peter Hamot
Assistant Scouting Director, Illinois & Wisconsin

Senior and Illinois commit Jack Wheeler has been a key piece for Morris ever since he was an underclassman, and he has also played a key role in their success over the last few seasons. They are winners of the I8 conference for the past three years, and he played a large role in their clinching of this feat this past week as they went 4-0 with a three-game sweep over conference foe Kaneland, going 9-for-15 at the dish with three home runs, two doubles, 11 RBIs and four runs scored - not to mention he also had a dominant outing on the mound. For his efforts, Wheeler has been named this week’s Player of the Week.

Wheeler got his week started in a 6-1 win over Kaneland on Monday, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. He would then follow up on Wednesday with a 2-for-4 performance with a double and two RBIs yet again - but also adding six innings on the mound to earn the 6-1 win over Kaneland, scattering four hits with no earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts.

He kept things rolling into Thursday where Morris would clinch the I8 conference title with a 10-2 win over Kaneland, going 1-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and a run scored. He saved arguably his best game for last with a 13-7 win over a ranked Oswego club 13-7, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, four RBIs, two runs scored and a walk - capping off a stellar week for the Morris senior.

The Illinois commit has long been one of the top players in Illinois’ 2025 group, currently coming in as the No. 19 ranked player in the state. There’s a blend of present ability as well as future projection with Wheeler, as he’s long been a performer for Morris on both sides of the ball, but it's hard to not dream on what is still yet to come for the 6-foot-5, 190-pound prospect. He’s a true third baseman at the next level with sure-handed actions and steady footwork paired with a strong arm - and his bat should only continue to get better as he continues to add strength, although there’s already a lot to like with his levers and present hand/bat-speed. One thing that may get overlooked at times is his ability on the mound, as we’ve seen him into the low-90s with a curveball and changeup to match. The future is extremely bright for Wheeler, and we are excited to be able to follow his journey throughout the coming years.

High leg lift with tuck, tall and fall down the mound with a compact, quick arm out front. Tossed five innings on the mound with four strikeouts. Fastball sat 86-91 mph, and he mixed in a curveball that sat 76-77 mph. At the plate, a right-handed hitter, he went 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI, two runs scored and a walk. He showed minimal in-zone swing-and-miss with a direct bat path through the zone.

We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within tomorrow's Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that.
