In a span of seven days, St. Clairsville won two league titles while improving to 15-3 on the season.
Brody Saunders, who is 5-0 on the season with a 1.00 ERA, won the Buckeye 8 championship game on Saturday after pitching the sixth-rated Division V team in Ohio to the OVAC title a week prior. TWO-WAY STANDOUTS
Getting the job done at the plate and on the mound is a common occurrence in Ohio these days and it was no exception this week with a trio of players leading the way.
One of them was Drew Jones who went 4-6 with a .727 OBP and 2.394 OPS, hitting three doubles and a home run while driving in five, walking four times and scoring three runs for Lakewood in wins over Westlake and St. Edward. STRONG PITCHING
It was a big week for strikeouts and Miami Trace’s Gaige Stuckey and Walsh Jesuit’s Shawn Sullivan both did their part.
Stuckey, an Ohio University commit ranked 14th among left-handers in the senior class in the state, did not give up an earned run while fanning 17 in his sixth win of the season. The ace for the No. 10 Division III team in Ohio has 74 strikeouts and just 10 walks while surrendering only 15 hits and two earned runs in 39.1 innings.
Sullivan, the 23rd-rated 2026 RHP in the country and an Alabama recruit, put 15 down on strikes, including 10 looking, in 7.2 three-hit shutout innings for win number three this year. The top-ranked junior right-hander in the state is now 3-0 with a 0.273 ERA, striking out 51 in 25.2 innings while holding the opposition to a .129 batting average.
There were more solid outings reported on the mound…
- Licking Valley, the No. 18 D-III team, entered this week with a 13-3 record and the one-two punch of Ohio U commit Evan Lichtenauer and Evan Roberts is a big reason why. Lichtenauer, the 17th-rated senior LHP, allowed two hits and his first earned run of the season in a win over Granville, fanning nine and walking none to improve to 5-0 with 48 Ks and three walks in 25 innings. Roberts, an uncommitted senior RHP, struck out 11 in a three-hit shutout of Hebron Lakewood to move to 5-1 on the season with 49 Ks in 30.1 frames.
- The battle between unbeatens Defiance and Wapakoneta lived up to the billing with pitchers Brez Zipfel and Grant Jolly excelling on the mound. Zipfel, the 56th-ranked senior RHP in Ohio and a Defiance College commit, gave up one run on three hits and two walks with 12 Ks to pick up the win for Defiance, the third-ranked D-III team. Jolly, a Marshall signee rated ninth among 2025 right-handed pitchers in the state, did not allow an earned run while giving up four hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts in seven innings for the sixth-rated Division III squad in Ohio.
- Toledo St. John’s senior southpaw Carson Bruning went the distance with six Ks in beating Detroit Catholic Central, the No. 14 D-1 team in Michigan. - Avon’s Jensen Petro earned his second save of the season with three innings of one-hit pitching. The 77th-rated junior RHP in the state has yet to give up an earned run in 14.2 innings, holding opponents to a .163 batting average.

- Colin Bornino picked up his third win of the season for Olentangy Berlin with a one-hit shutout against Marysville. The junior RHP fanned 10 and now has 29 in 28 innings with a 3-0 record for the No. 10 D-I team in the state.
- Olentangy Orange senior right-hander Devin Parker did not allow an earned run in five innings with seven Ks and one walk, lowering his season ERA to 1.40 while boosting his strikeout total to 25 in 20 innings for the third-ranked team in Ohio in Division I.
- Parker Newburn now has a 20-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio after a win over Leetonia. The senior right-hander has given up just two hits on the season helping United Local to a 14-5 record through last week.
- Aiden Anders threw the third perfect game in Gilmour Academy history. The sophomore right-hander went six innings to beat Western Reserve Academy in the milestone win.
YOUTH SHINES
Nick Holland did it all for Amanda-Clearcreek this week.
The sophomore SS/RHP went 7-12 at the plate with three doubles and a triple, scoring four runs and stealing four bases helping A-C to wins over Bloom-Carroll, Liberty Union and Logan Elm. Holland scored the game-winning run against Bloom-Carroll and also struck out 14 and did not give up an earned run in a two-hitter against Liberty Union.
For the season, the 10th-grader is 3-0 with 25 Ks in 15.2 innings on the mound while carrying a .395 average at the plate with 22 runs and 15 stolen bases.
There were additional freshmen and sophomores that came up big this week…
- Sherwood Fairview 2028 Anthony Singer threw a six-inning no-hitter in an 11-0 win over Hicksville, striking out nine and walking two while also going 3-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. The son of Fairview head coach Andy Singer, the freshman right-hander is now 4-0 with 27 Ks in 16.1 innings, giving up no runs and just one hit for the No. 9 Division VI team in Ohio. Singer is also batting .404 with 19 RBIs.
- Another freshman two-way, Jacobie Balo of Bishop Rosecrans, came up big going 4-8 on the week with a double, triple, run, three walks and five RBIs. The sixth-ranked freshman SS in Ohio is now batting .596 with a .648 OBP and 1.520 OPS, driving in 19 runs. Balo, who is 4-1 pitching, also gave up one hit in two shutout innings.
- Leland Vargo threw a no-hitter with 10 Ks and one walk against Heartland Christian. The Newton Falls sophomore also hit .333 on the week with four runs scored to boost his average to .370.
- Will Hymes went 3-4 with two walks in two games played this week by Massillon Washington. The sophomore OF/1B is hitting .425 on the season with a .571 OBP and .625 slugging percentage, walking 13 times.
- Crestline sophomore Quentin Kapp was 3-5 with a double and two stolen bases and is now hitting .380 for the campaign with 18 runs, 12 RBIs, 10 doubles, nine stolen bases and eight walks.
THE TEAMS
Lynchburg-Clay has been dominant to say the least.
A pair of 10-0 wins this week against Manchester and Eastern pushed the season mark of shutouts to 10 for the 19th-ranked Division V squad in the Buckeye state.
Finishing up last week with a 12-2 record, Lynchburg-Clay has outscored opponents 162-21 on the season. The team ERA is 1.11.
- Olentangy Orange is rated third in Ohio in Division I despite losing their number two pitcher for the season with a broken leg. The top two pitchers this year for Orange have combined for 43 strikeouts in 36 innings with a 1.55 ERA.
- At 12-6 on the year, Marysville is on the cusp of being ranked in the Top 20 in D-I despite batting injuries. The number three pitcher and best outfielder has been unable to throw most of the season while a starting infielder was lost to mono three weeks ago and is yet to return.
- With wins over three state-ranked teams in one week (Leipsic, Van Buren and Columbus Grove), Liberty-Benton is now 12-3 and rated 11th in Division V. The three losses to date have been to a pair of second-ranked teams in Ohio, Defiance (Division III) and Tiffin Calvert (Division VII), along with Macon County from Tennessee.
- For the second time this season Caldwell went a whole week without playing a game due to weather. The seventh-ranked Division VI team’s lone loss so far in going 11-1 on the year came in the OVAC AA championship game to D-VI No. 2 Toronto, 4-3.
- Watch out for Padua Franciscan. The 12-6 squad rallied from a 4-1 deficit to beat Walsh Jesuit and now gets ace pitcher Nathan Krayzel, a Walsh commit, back from a shoulder injury which has forced the 47th-rated senior RHP in Ohio to miss the season up to this point.
- Speaking of injuries, Perrysburg is 13-2 and rated ninth in Division I playing without shortstop Connor Kessinger who broke his hand. Kessinger, a senior who set the school record for runs scored in a season last year in helping Perrysburg to the state tournament, will hopefully be back by tournament time.
