VENTURA, CALIF. - The Uncommitted Spotlight Series continues on as we are in the thick of the 2025 CIF High School season. With than in mind Prep Baseball California is continuing to highlight some of the top uncommitted class of '26 athletes for college programs to be following throughout the remainder of the spring schedule and into the summer. The player featured today is one of the top players in the state of California and figures prominently in our Class of 2026 Rankings

We invite you to get to know them through the eyes of our Prep Baseball California staff of scouts both through our in person looks at players and/or the data-backed numbers collected at our events with our partnered companies. TrackMan, Blast Motion, and VALD Performance provide comparable data to project and evaluate players. All of these systems come together to give a clear picture at what colleges will get when a players steps onto their campus.

Today, we put the spotlight on the #268 ranked player in the 2026 class who is going to see a big rise after this spring season in the California rankings in SoCal '26 INF/RHP Mason Crang from San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, Calif..  The two-way product has put together a pair of strong performances on the varsity level for the Royals. This spring the JR. two-way slashed .340/.393/.427 over 112 plate appearances with 103 official at bats in 28 games played. Crang posted 35 hits (second on the team), six doubles (tied for second), one homer (tied for second), drove in 17 runs (tied for second), scored 14 runs (third on the team) and had nine walks (tied for third) to be on of the top performers all over for San Marcos. On the mound Crang posted a 3.63 ERA over 12 appearances, earning one win with a total of 34.2 innings while striking out 32 hitters. This backs up a strong soph. offensive season in 2024 where Crang slashed .282/.386/.411 with 12 BBs (second on team), eight doubles (first on team), one homer (tied for first), 24 hits (first on team), 14 RBIs (first on team), 14 runs scored (second on team) in his 102 plate apperances with 85 official at bats. In his soph. season Crang tossed 22.1 innings with 19 Ks, a WHIP below 1.00, earning two wins over nine appearances with an impressive 1.25 ERA.

Crang made his first appearance on the Prep Baseball California event platform by attending the Central California Preseason All State where he was one of the top performing players in attendance both as a hitter and a pitcher. Crang will return to the Prep Baseball California event stage by attending the Future Games Tryout: Central California in June of 2025 looking to earn a spot of the Senior Future Games roster as one of the top uncommitted '26s in the state.

Crang is an aggressive RH hitter who features intent in his load with an aggressive forward move that he controls surpisingly well and takes an aggressive swing which features impact and damage to the middle/pull side of the field. During his batting practice session at the Preseason All State Crang showed strong, quick hands up to 21.8 MPH hand speed, intriguing bat speed at 72.8 MPH and quickness in his turn at 18.7 Gs of rotational acceleration. His swing intent combined with a strong approach, rhythm and feel for timing played well during batting practice where reached a top end exit velocity of 97.9 MPH, average exit velocity at 93.6 MPH, max distance of 362' on a pull side bomb, and posted strong 60% Hard Hit and Sweet Spot rates during batting practice. In addition to his batting practice showing Crang turned around an 89 MPH FB for a laced hit during the game play portion of the event.

At the same event Crang lived at 85-87 MPH on his FB and touched 88 MPH (during a live look in the 2025 High School  preseason) with quality spin on his FB (2031 RPMs average) while showing both riding life to the pitch with 13.8" of IVB on average and adding running life with 10.3" of avg. horizontal run playing to a pitch he ride up in the zone and run in on the hands of RH hitters or down and away to LH hitters. His primary secondary is a strong CB which has a two plane shape (averaged -7.9" of IVB while averaging -8.2" of horizontal break and solid spin traits (2450 RPMs max / 2385 RPMs avg) while living at 75-76 MPH. Crang compliments his two primary offerings with an emerging CHG which shows potential at 81-82 MPH with action to his arm side generating on average 15.8" of horizontal run with more of a two-seam FB style shape that he will need to kill more spin on to play better with his FB while killing lift on the pitch with an average of 11" of IVB. He throws all three offerings from a release height of 5'6" on average for the FB / 5'4-5" on average for the CB/CHG which makes it difficult for hitters to determine any pre-pitch tip presently, but can continue to improve to tighten that window even more.

Crang has shown solid athleticism with a 7.32 60 time at the Central California Preseason All State with splits of 1.70 at 10 yards and 4.04 at 30 yards while showing a top run speed of 18.7 MPH. Crang posted 4.3-4.35 run times on a pair of ground balls during a live look in the later portion of the 2025 high school season. His arm is solid at 82 MPH across the INF and has shown versatility to play 3B/1B and there is potential he could handle 2B or even LF to find spots for his high quality bat to play at the next level.

With a strong offensive profile that continues to trend upward, defensive versatility and then you a solid three pitch arsenal, experience starting or working out of a bullpen to go with a track record of quality performance Crang is a strong uncommitted 2026 for college coaches to be keeping close tabs on with his performance at the Future Games Tryout: Central California and has a chance of being in Georgia on the Senior Future Games squad to represent California.

One of my favorite baseball phrases is “hitters hit” and for two years now Crang has simply hit at a high quality level over multiple in-game looks and at the 2025 Central California Preseason All State. In this live look the thing that stood out the most for me with Crang was his ability to adjust to the pitchers during the course of the game (which was an improvement from my look at him during MLK weekend 2025). After getting caught out front and capping a 3-U groundout during his first at bat against spin Crang made the adjustment to keep his hands back at launch while allowing the ball to travel deeper into the zone (staying more through the middle of the field versus looking to do damage to the pull side) and resulted in a trio of well struck baseballs. On a hanging breaking ball Crang crushed a deep foul HR distance drive through the wind blowing in from LF before staying on outer half FB up the middle for an RBI and then in his final at bat repeated the process sting another outer half  FB up the middle for another RBI. The apparent conscious adjustment to produce against how he was being pitched was an improvement to the offensive profile for Crang showing maturity in his offensive approach to go with his strong present swing. Another upward move for Crang came in his athleticism as he is noticeably running better down the line with a more athletic frame including clocking a 4.32 home to 1B time in game. Crang continues to trend in the right direction as a college recruit for the 2026 class.

For over a year now I’ve been in on the offensive ability for Crang from the first two looks at him in 2024 High School season and beyond the RH hitting corner INF defender has consistently hit the ball hard with solid results. On the 2025 season Crang has jumped out to an impressive start entering the game with a .432/.500/.622 slash line over 10 games with four doubles and a homer and the numbers went up with another two hit performance while driving in a run during this game. But, for me the bigger takeaway was some polish to his approach at the plate between an MLK weekend look and this game. Over MLK Crang who is an aggressive hitter who is consistently in swing mode did get exposed a bit to quality spin which resulted in chase out of the zone low. The arm for Dos Pueblos was pitching heavily off of both a solid SLD/quality CB while mixing in a solid present FB. Crang chased an early low breaking ball in his first at bat, but after that he showed discipline to leave spin alone unless it was up in the zone (singled to RF on an elevated breaking ball) and jumped on a FB in the zone for another hit. The swing has always worked for me, but seeing some growth to his offensive process has me intrigued to see the next steps for what is already one of the stronger offensive pieces in the 2026 class on the Central Coast of California.

Crang made the trip down from the Central Coast to the High Desert and showed that his talented 2-way profile travels very well. The top offensive performer as a Soph. at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara Crang opened the day by putting together a loud performance during the Showcase Workout. Crang more than looks capable of staying at the hot corner with the athletic ability to handle 2B, as well including a 7.3 60 and 82 MPH INF arm velocity. But, the RH hitter showed conistent loud impact off the bat during BP from an aggressive, but balanced RH swing. Posting a Max EV at 97.9 MPH with an Avg EV of 93.6 MPH and a Max Distance of 360' on a drive to LCF. The BP performance translated into game as he turned on a hard line drive to LF for a hit off Newhouse (the lone hit Newhouse gave up) on an upper 80's FB. Yet, as good as what Crang did as a position player he was able to match it with his outing on the mound. Flashing a 84-87 MPH FB that is backed up by a 81-82 MPH CHG and 75-76 MPH curveball which all 3 he can throw for strikes to put together a strong showing on the bump.
