OSSAA 6A Regional Preview: Bixby Regional

The Bixby Regional gets underway on Wednesday, May 7th featuring host Bixby, Sand Springs, Norman, and Ponca City. We break down each team’s record, players to watch, and a deeper look at each team as they head into this week’s regional and look to make a state tournament run.

Coach Wilson and the Bixby Spartans head into the postseason with confidence and momentum, backed by a 27-9 record and a 12-2 finish in district play that has them primed to make noise in the 6A bracket. With a deep and experienced senior class, a stable of college-bound arms, and a balanced offense, the Spartans boast one of the more complete rosters in the state. On the mound, Brian Justice leads the way as a two-way threat, flashing a competitive edge and quality stuff that has anchored the rotation. Justice also contributes offensively, giving Bixby valuable versatility. Joining him in the rotation is Cooper Leggett, one of the top junior right-handers in the state. Leggett pounds the zone with a mature arsenal and has emerged as a go-to option in multiple spots as a reliever and starter. Nate Lloyd and Coen Miller round out a deep and experienced pitching staff, both offering strong velocity and the ability to miss bats. Landen Wegener and Brennen Galligan give the Spartans even more depth, allowing them to match up effectively in a playoff setting. Behind the plate, Brock Copass has shown advanced feel for the game and handles the staff well beyond his years. His emergence has been a key piece for the Spartans’ defensive consistency. Offensively, the Spartans can produce throughout the lineup. Rhett Leu and Grant Goldman bring power and experience to the infield corners, while Barrett Standley adds a spark as an emerging young outfielder with on-base skills and athleticism at the top of the Bixby order. Graham Knight, another contributor, has shown pop at the plate and solid defense in the outfield, while Dax Sullivan provides depth and defensive reliability on the infield.The Spartans have won this season by combining high-level pitching with disciplined, opportunistic offense and consistent defense. With their experience, depth on the mound, and a rising group of underclassmen making key contributions, Bixby looks every bit like a contender poised for a deep postseason run.

Coach Watkins and the Sandites enter the postseason as a battle-tested group that has shown resilience and growth throughout the year, finishing with a 20-16 record and a strong 10-4 mark in district play. Despite facing a tough schedule, the Sandites have consistently competed, and their mix of high-upside talent and gritty performance makes them a team no one will want to see in the playoffs. The pitching staff is headlined by electric right-hander Easton Webb, one of the top arms in the state for his class. Webb features advanced velocity and swing-and-miss stuff, giving Sand Springs a true ace capable of taking over a postseason game. When he’s on the mound, the Sandites have a chance to beat anyone. Offensively, Jackson Turney brings middle-of-the-order presence with the ability to drive the baseball and produce in key spots. He’s complemented by Alex Dudley at shortstop, who offers smooth defensive actions and solid production at the plate, anchoring the infield with consistency and poise. In the outfield, Tatum Wells has provided speed, range, and an improving offensive profile, helping set the tone at the top of the order. Versatility is a strength for Sand Springs, and Boston Kissee embodies that with his ability to impact the game from multiple positions while giving quality at-bats. Kaden Pope is another young infielder who has emerged as a key contributor, flashing instincts on both sides of the ball and showing signs of being a foundational piece moving forward. The Sandites have relied on timely hitting, solid defense, and a top-end arm to win big games this season. If they can get a few early leads and Webb can set the tone on the mound, Sand Springs has the potential to be a sleeper pick for a deep postseason push.  

Norman Tigers

Coach Merrell and the Tigers enter the postseason as a gritty, competitive group that has shown flashes of upside throughout the year. Despite an up-and-down district campaign, the Tigers have put together a solid overall record at 18-16 and are capable of making things interesting behind a core group of impact players. Leading the way is Christian Day, a dynamic outfielder with the ability to affect the game on both sides of the ball. Whether it’s tracking down balls in the gap or driving the offense with his bat, Day has been a steady presence for the Tigers all season long. Preston Baublit has emerged as another key contributor in the outfield, offering speed, energy, and a developing offensive skillset that’s added spark to the lineup. His ability to flip the lineup and play strong defense has been valuable throughout the spring. Brody Hailey provides power and flexibility, handling both first base and catching duties with poise. He brings physicality to the middle of the order and has been a consistent run producer for Norman. On the mound and at shortstop, Ethan Vinson has been one of the Tigers’ most important pieces. With a strong arm and competitive edge, Vinson offers a quality presence on the mound and plays a key role as a defender and offensive contributor. With a roster full of underclassmen gaining valuable experience and a few upperclassmen leading the way, Norman has the pieces to play spoiler in the postseason. If their top performers can rise to the moment, the Tigers could be a dangerous out in any matchup.

Ponca City Wildcats

Overall Record: 13-21
District Record: 3-11

Coach Middlebrooks and the Wildcats enter the postseason looking to play their best baseball at the right time, leaning on a young core that has shown steady development throughout a challenging schedule. While the district record doesn’t tell the full story, this team has competed hard and laid the foundation for what could be a promising future. Leading the charge is Kalon Covey, a smooth-fielding shortstop who brings consistency on defense and upside at the plate. Covey has been a bright spot in the lineup and a tone-setter in the infield, showing signs of becoming a key leader for the program moving forward. Hayden LeClair offers athleticism and versatility in the outfield. A senior presence with the ability to track balls and deliver tough at-bats, LeClair provides needed experience and stability for the Wildcats. Isaiah Branstetter is a two-way contributor with a strong frame, giving Ponca City power at the plate and valuable innings on the mound. His growth this season has been a key part of the Wildcats' ability to stay competitive in close games. At third base and on the hill, Lance Arbona brings a competitive edge and a developing skill set. He’s shown flashes both defensively and on the mound, giving Ponca City another dependable player to build around. Though their postseason path will be a tough one, the Wildcats have a young, energetic group capable of playing spoiler. If their top players can step up and embrace the underdog role, Ponca City could be a tough out for any higher seed.
