Michigan Diamond Notes: April 21-27
Brady Sager produced a season worth of numbers in one week.
The senior shortstop scored 19 runs, drove in 16 and stole 11 bases leading Chesaning to six wins this past week. The Alma recruit went 14-22 at the plate with six doubles, two home runs and a triple, walking six times.
If that wasn’t enough, the uncommitted senior picked up a pair of pitching wins over Lakeville and Alma, not allowing an earned run in 14 innings while fanning 27, walking three and giving up eight hits.
For the season, Sager is hitting .593 with an astounding 25 runs, 31 RBIs, 24 stolen bases, 15 doubles and 15 walks for the 13-3 Indians. Additionally, the 18-year-old is 4-0 on the mound with a 0.00 ERA over 28 innings of pitching this year.

SOLID PITCHING
Two pitchers with similar names helped Bay City Western and Portland St. Patrick remain number one in the state in Division 1 and 4, respectively.
Brayden Simmon took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and went the distance in Bay City Western’s eight-inning victory over Flint Powers. The eighth-rated senior LHP in the state, a Saginaw Valley commit, is now 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA for the top-ranked D-1 team in Michigan.
Brayden Simon was also dominant for Portland St. Patrick, throwing a two-hit shutout at Pewano-Westphalia, striking out 16 and not walking a batter. The 62nd-ranked 2025 RHP in the state has yet to allow an earned run in 19 innings, fanning 40 and walking just one while giving up four hits in a 3-0 start to the season. Opponents are batting just .067 against the Kellogg CC signee, who has a 0.263 WHIP.
There were more impressive outings reported on the hill this week …
- Preston Kann threw a five-inning no-hitter for Standish-Sterling, facing only 17 batters against Ogemaw Heights. The fifth-ranked junior RHP in Michigan, a Toledo recruit, struck out 15 and walked just one for the No. 1 Division 2 team in the state.
- Junior southpaw Jack Danielewicz also tossed a five-inning no-hitter for Grosse Pointe South, striking out nine and not walking a batter versus St. Clair.
- Walled Lake Central’s Luke Nelson also did not permit a hit in a five-inning victory over rival Walled Lake Western. The senior left-hander retired eight batters on strikes while walking three.
- Algonac had a combined no-hitter in a 3-1 win over Imlay City. Bryce Simpson struck out eight and walked two in four innings for the 10th-rated D-3 team, allowing one run before Nate Vercammen closed it out over the final three innings, surrendering one walk with three Ks. Simpson is the 15th-ranked senior LHP in Michigan, a Wayne State signee, while Vercammen is a 2025 right-hander.
- Central Michigan commit Chad Brown took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of a one-hitter against Valley Lutheran. The 157th-rated 2025 right-handed pitcher in the nation walked one while striking out 15 for Hemlock.
- Gavin Buckley needed just 88 pitches in a four-hit shutout of Hopkins. The Grandville Calvin Christian senior did not allow a walk while putting 13 down on strikes in the seven-inning masterpiece. Buckley has now faced 44 batters on the season and not given up a run, permitting four hits and one walk while striking out 20 in 13.1 frames.
- University of Liggett senior Mack Phillips has yet to surrender an earned run this year after a seven-inning three-hitter to beat Allen Park. The 25th-rated 2025 right-handed pitcher in the state fanned nine and walked one for the top-ranked D-3 team in the state. For the season, the Dayton recruit is 3-0 with a 0.762 WHIP, striking out 35 in 21 innings while giving up just five hits.
- Kaden Jominy is another standout hurler with a 0.00 ERA on the season. The uncommitted Mattawan junior allowed two hits and an unearned run in a five-inning two-hitter this week, striking out 10. The No. 3 2026 RHP in Michigan has given up just three hits in 13 innings thus far with a 3-0 record.
- Strikeouts continue for Landon Love, a Beaverton junior who fanned eight in 6.2 innings of two-hit pitching this week. The 143rd-ranked 2026 in the state has now struck out 55 in 27 innings with a 0.778 ERA. The southpaw has won three of four decisions.
- Parchment senior Ben Cretsinger struck out 17 in 7 innings out of the pen as the Panthers picked up a 9 inning win over Allegan.
HOT AT THE PLATE
Hitting for the cycle is a rare feat that Brian Dopp accomplished this past week for Adrian-Madison.
The junior shortstop completed the week going 9-14 with two doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs. Dopp also had 10 RBIs and six steals during a 4-1 week by Adrian-Madison, which pushed the team’s season record to 9-1.
There were other standouts with the bat worth mentioning as well…
- Ryan Rohrer reached base 15 out of 23 plate appearances, with two home runs, a triple and five walks for the fifth-ranked Division 3 team in Michigan. The Kalamazoo Christian senior outfielder scored eight runs, brought in five and stole four bases during a 10-18 week that upped his season average to .436.
- Caden Bowen has now scored 20 runs this season for Paw Paw after touching home plate six times during a 7-13 week at the plate that included a double, triple, walk and three HBPs to go along with six runs, nine RBIs and two stolen bases. The junior outfielder carries a .405 average.
- Lamphere senior Aidan Grzesikowski hit a pair of home runs and two doubles with six RBIs and four stolen bases this past week. A CF/MIF, Grzesikowski went 6-12 to increase his season batting mark to .447 with seven doubles, three home runs and two triples.
- Luke Urso now has six doubles on the year after pounding out two during a 6-11 week at the plate for Holton. The junior first baseman had three RBIs while scoring once and stealing a base.
- The 36th-ranked junior RHP in the state is getting it done at the plate for Portage Central. Rylan McNally is now hitting .400 on the year after going 8-17 this past week with five RBIs, four runs, three doubles and two walks.
- Cam Kaul is carrying a .607 batting average following a 9-13 performance this past week for Saginaw Nouvel. The Lansing CC recruit scored nine runs to push his season total to 17, while also hitting three triples and two doubles. The center fielder also walked and stole three bases.
- A 4-1 week has Pinckney at 12-3 on the year with Evan McGlothin playing a major role. The senior catcher went 7-15 with two home runs and two doubles while walking four times and reaching on a HBP twice. McGlothin, who is now hitting .471 with a 1.437 OPS, also scored six times and brought in four.
- Patrick Dougherty had nine hits and touched home nine times this week for Mattawan. The junior left fielder was 9-19 with seven steals and two doubles during a 5-1 week for the 8-5-3 Wildcats.
- Maksim Neshov was 7-11 with five runs and five RBis for Brother Rice this week. The No. 1 freshman in the state, the 20th-ranked 2028 outfielder in the country, also had two home runs and a triple in three games played.
- Neshov’s teammate at Brother Rice, Broder Katke, was equally impressive going 9-12 with five doubles and four RBIs. The top-rated sophomore in Michigan and seventh-rated 2027 catcher in the nation is a Duke commit.
- Cole Van Ameyde came up huge for Brother Rice against Edison. The Michigan State signee went 3-3 with three home runs in three at-bats for the No. 4 Division I team in Michigan.
TWO-WAY STANDOUTS
Fran Love stole the 100th base of his career during a win over Birmingham Seaholm.
That was just part of a big week by the senior SS/RHP at Ann Arbor Greenhills, who went 10-19 with 12 runs scored for the No. 6 Division 3 team in Michigan. Love also had two walks while driving in three and stealing five bases.
If that wasn’t enough, the Alma recruit struck out seven and did not allow a run during a five-inning one-hit outing in a win over Gabriel Richard to move to 2-0 on the year with a pair of saves. Love has given up just four hits and one earned run while striking out 17 in 12.1 innings.
At the plate, Love is hitting .426 with 27 runs and 16 stolen bases.
There were other players also worth noting that came up big at the dish as well as on the mound this week.
- Wake Forest commit Ryan Bosch struck out 16 throwing a perfect game in a 10-0 win, his third victory of the season. The Fruitport senior, the 46th-ranked 2025 LHP in the country, has now fanned 31 and walked four in 13 innings, winning all three decisions. The No. 6 senior in Michigan also drove in seven runs with four singles and three doubles in 15 at-bats for the 19th-ranked D-2 team in the state.
- Zack Middleton had a win and a save, not permitting an earned run in five innings with 12 Ks for Kingsley. The 85th-ranked senior RHP in Michigan, who has 25 strikeouts in 13.3 frames with a 1.05 ERA on the season, also produced at the plate going 5-10 with a double and five RBIs. Middleton is now hitting .606.
- A grand slam highlighted a .600 week at the plate by Nick Kaminski, who drove in six and had a double for Romeo. The No. 21 junior right-handed pitcher in the state also picked up his third win of the year with seven Ks in 5.2 innings against Eisenhower. Kaminski is now 3-0 with a save and 23 strikeouts in 17.1 frames while also batting .417 for the 10th-rated D-1 team.
- Cam Townsend put 10 batters down on strikes in a six-inning four-hit shutout performance on the mound for Fraser. The senior also went 5-9 at the dish with a double, RBI, three walks, four runs and two stolen bases.
- Newberry’s Matthew Rahilly picked up win number two on the season with six innings of four-hit pitching, striking out 10, walking two and not giving up an earned run in a complete game win over Sault Ontario Black Sox. The senior was also 5-6 with three RBIs, pushing his season batting mark to .625.
- Jonathan Harrison is getting it done as a two-way performer his sophomore season. The 2027 catcher and pitcher was 9-15 with three triples and a double, scoring five runs and bringing in six for Dearborn Edsel Ford. Harrison also had 9 Ks in a three-hit shutout for his second win of the season in three decisions.
- Ethan Armstrong made a statement in a win over Taylor, fanning 15 and walking three in a one-hit victory while going 2-3 at the plate with a home run. For the week, the Garden City standout, the No. 1 junior in the state and the 29th-rated 2026 RHP in the country, was 5-7 with two home runs, a double and five RBIs.
TEAM NOTES
- Mattawan rallied from an 11-3 seventh-inning deficit on Saturday to beat Holt 12-11, capping off a 5-1 week for Brett Vaughn’s squad.
- Six wins this week has Paw Paw riding an 11-game winning streak to improve to 14-4 on the year.
- Chesaning also went 6-0 for the week, winning every game by six or more runs and outscoring opponents 85-19, moving to 13-3 on the season.
- It was a solid 5-0 week for Greenhills, which beat Erie Mason, Gabriel Richard twice and Birmingham Seahold twice. Tom Ward’s team is now 14-2.
- Fruitpoint won four games by an accumulative score of 53-2 this week to stay unbeaten through 10 games on the season.
