2025 OHSAA Tournament: Division IV State Semifinal - #19 Perkins vs #14 Indian Hill

AKRON - Perkins took a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning and held on to defeat Indian Hill 4-3 in the Division IV state semifinals at Thurman Munson Stadium on Friday night.

Held hitless by Indian Hill starter Jim Liebel until the fifth, Perkins scored its first run without the benefit of a hit, then added another in the frame to go up 2-0. Talon Walton was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and came home on a throwing error for the initial run. Blake Parker then produced the first hit of the game by the Pirates and eventually scored on a hit from Sam Schweinfurth.

The 19th-ranked team in D-IV added a pair of runs in the sixth. Bryce Davie and Braxden Martin both had a single, stolen base and run scored in the inning.

The runs proved to be the difference with Indian Hill scoring three in the top of the seventh on two walks, an error and a wild pitch.

Kash Koch pitched into the seventh to get the win, sending the Pirates into the state finals against Lake Catholic on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Canal Park.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Koch was big for Perkins, not allowing an earned run with eight strikeouts in six innings of five-hit pitching. Three out of the first six innings Indian Hill put their leadoff hitter on base but Koch was up to the challenge. None was bigger than in the fourth when Jim Liebel led off with a triple but was left stranded with two strikeouts sandwiched around a walk and pop out. Koch threw 67 of 117 pitches for strikes.

WHAT’S NEXT?: Expectations will certainly be high for Indian Hill next season with no senior starters in the lineup. Devlan Daniel, the 64th-ranked sophomore in the country who had a single and double for the 14th-ranked D-IV team, headlines a returning core that includes six juniors, three sophomores and a freshman that started in the state semifinals.
